About Rachel

I am a 7th-year full-time Honours student at the University of Sydney and have been tutoring since 2013. At my peak, I privately tutored several primary, high school and university students whilst working at a local coaching college however had to step back due to ill health and the need to focus on my own studies.

I began tutoring after graduating high school in 2013 when I noticed my neighbour's children and high school friends in lower grades struggling with their schoolwork. My main, long-term primary school student, whom I began tutoring when he was 10, was initially ranked as the lowest in his grade in Maths and English - when I stopped tutoring him prior to the Selective Schools Test (due to his overwhelming sporting commitments), he was ranked 1st in Maths and 3rd in English. Similar successes can be said of my other students.

As I attend to the individual needs and wants of each student, tutoring them in academic subjects, essay writing, study skills, etc., each student's subsequent successes are unique and cannot always be easily quantified by academic results. For example, I have taught sleep hygiene and physical activity as necessary components of successful study skills - students cannot achieve success in academia without physical and mental health.

I tailor each teaching style to the individual student to help them learn as efficiently as possible and am very persistent when it comes to making sure students understand the content. If they haven't understood my explanations, I will keep trying different teaching methods for however long is required until they understand - I'm stubborn and don't give up!

About the lesson

My teaching method is geared towards the individual student - after the initial introductions, I find out what the student is struggling with, whether it be academic subjects, such as English or Maths, or even foundational knowledge, such as study skills, and begin targeting those problem subjects by providing further explanations of concepts and step-by-step instructions on how to tackle the work. I also further narrow my focus once specific issues become clear, such as issues regarding a single type of mathematic problem, and provide extra guidance and practice. I not only attempt to provide the most-thorough explanations but complement them with visual examples to activate both of the perceptual pathways of sight and sound to better ensure the information is retained.
