With 30 years of teaching experience teach 5th graders, I know what my students need to know to be successful. Instead of "teaching to the test", I create meaning for my students by engaging them in high interest learning activities. Finding high interest reading material that is accessible to my students' levels is where I start. Students learn all about the various elements of fiction through reading novels. They also learn to identify many of the various text structures associated with nonfiction texts in order to maximize comprehension. My students learn to write effective expository, opinion, and narrative essays using all appropriate conventions of the English language. My students make outstanding growth with my methods and instruction.
