About Jasper

I am a 23 year old Brightonian who graduated with a First Class Ba Hons. in Ancient History from the University of Manchester in 2019. My hobbies include reading (specifically historical, theological non fiction, and French and Russian fiction), and playing in my band, in which we were lucky enough to do our first UK tour just before lockdown! From experience at Cardinal Newman School in Hove and BHASVIC, history teachers can present the course material in a very traditional, bland and un-engaging way, which ultimately made numerous students in my classes develop a distaste for the subject. I feel that my age and relatively recent experience of what it is like to be un-engaged with the way content is taught at school puts me in a strong position to relate to, and sympathise with those student who feel the same as I did. It would be great to be able to lift those clouds and spark a new passion in students for the subject and revision process in general.

Before going to University I went travelling around South East Asia, and one of the most rewarding experiences of the trip was to teach English to school children in Vietnam, as a way of paying my board. Throughout my studies at University, I had several students who I would help with GCSE and A level history History, and Classics; some I would visit for face to face tuition, and others online.

One of the biggest failures, and most frustrating aspects of the education system is its inability to teach students how to learn. I found that by nurturing the imagination of my students by developing creative revision techniques to make the content as fun and engaging as possible, (depending on their learning preference e.g visual, aural etc.) students were able to recall huge amounts of the course content in a relatively short amount of time. All of my students that have engaged with the mnemonic techniques that I have developed have seen huge improvements in their work, and I would be more than happy to provide any testimonials if required! I employed these same methods in my own University studies, which enabled me to excel in my course.

A huge part of my teaching style is to teach pupils how to identify the key points of the grade criteria and plan the revision and essay writing process around these hurdles, to ensure that the examination and assignment game is played to the best of their ability.
