About Leonie

I work with well qualified, ambitious clients who are driven to achieving success in their life. Most of my clients/students are using English as a second language for work purposes.

For several decades now, I have studied and worked in many different roles that help people improve their lives. With Australian university qualifications in both Psychology/Counselling and also Teaching English as a Second Language, sometimes my sessions are focused on personal or counselling issues, sometimes about language, communicating with others and career issues and very often a blend of all the above. You get to set the agenda.

I have decades of experience in helping people who have moved to Australia and are re-starting careers, finding new careers or trying to advance in their career. I also have clients/students who have experienced many changes in relationships, careers, maturity and want to look into who they really are now, in order to move forward successfully.

These sessions are for ambitious, high-achievers who are ready to examine what is holding them back and do some serious work towards achieving greater personal and/or career success.

My aim is to provide you with the support you need for professional and/or personal purposes. Sometimes we need someone to confidentially share things with. Sometimes we need non-judgmental feedback and motivation for our plans or dreams. You may need to work on confidence, self-identity, a new vision for the future, or a roadmap from where you are now to where you want to be.

If you are ready to be challenged, to identify and make changes to what is limiting your true potential, and to work hard to make success happen then let's begin today.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I think my interest in multi-culturalism began in about Grade 6, aged 10, studying about other countries and having international pen pals. I have always loved reading and was a strong reader and writer from early primary school. I wanted to study English and Literature at University, but changed my mind at the last minute. I finished my first degree in Psychology and funnily enough, immediately started work as an ESL teacher instead. I guess it was always meant to be.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach and the topics you like to discuss with students.

I teach all forms of English – speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, accent modification. If students are preparing for an exam the topics cover everything from ancient history to science. Otherwise, I find my students are mostly interested in either improving their business communication skills or improving their speaking and listening skills for social purposes or public speaking.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes! I remember that I had a teacher, called Clare Waters, in Year 7 for English Reading class. She was lovely. I think she understood my love of books and was really encouraging. I thought this was the best class in the world – just reading and writing book reviews.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In order to be a good tutor you have to know your subject well, be creative in finding solutions to your student’s problems and be kind and encouraging. However, in order to be a GREAT tutor, you have to want your students to achieve their goals more than they do, you have to be able to help them find motivation when the road seems long, you have to believe in them more than they believe in themselves and you have to see their potential and help make it a reality.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I didn’t find every subject easy but I tried hard.
I didn’t love every subject I studied but I persisted.
Over the years, what I was good at and what I loved, slowly became more obvious and so I focused on these subjects more and more, until I could see clearly what I was meant to do in life.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

My biggest difficulty is that I love my subject and job so much that I could easily keep a tutoring session going long overtime without either of us realising because we are fully engrossed and enjoying the time together.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’d say my passion is removing language barriers to help others achieve their passion or goals. I’m passionate about empowering people by improving their language skills.
  • What makes you a SuperProf?

Awwww! Maybe because I truly care about each and every student and their challenges and achievements and also because I believe success in teaching is based on whether the student is actually learning what they have asked to be taught.
