Five core strategies underpin strong reading comprehension and fluency at every level.

• Phonemic awareness: Recognising and working with the individual sounds in spoken words — the building block of all reading development.
• Phonics: Phonics connects printed letters to their sounds, giving learners a reliable system for sounding out new words.
• Reading fluency: A fluent reader moves through text confidently, which builds both speed and understanding.
• Vocabulary development: The wider your vocabulary, the more meaning you can unlock from everything you read.
• Reading comprehension: The ability to understand, interpret, and reflect on what you've read — the ultimate goal of all reading instruction.

A private reading tutor can assess which of these areas needs the most attention and tailor lessons accordingly.

Reading tutors in Kerikeri typically charge $25/h per hour.

Several factors influence the price:

• The age and stage of the learner (primary, intermediate, secondary)
• The instructor's credentials and track record
• The number of hours booked per week
• The lesson format (online, at home, at the tutor's)

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their approach before committing.

Research consistently points to systematic, phonics-based instruction as the most effective method for learning to read.

• Start with phonemic awareness: Train the ear to recognise individual sounds before connecting them to letters on the page.
• Use systematic phonics: Systematic phonics means working through sounds in a logical order so each new skill builds on the last.
• Build fluency through practice: Practising with texts at the right level improves both confidence and reading speed.
• Expand vocabulary actively: The more words a reader recognises on sight, the more smoothly they can read and understand new texts.

A qualified reading tutor can identify exactly where a learner is on this journey and apply the right techniques at the right time.
