The fundamentals of Portuguese vocabulary include greetings, numbers, and a handful of common verbs.

• Greetings: words like olá, bom dia and obrigado cover most everyday exchanges. They're usually the first phrases any beginner learns.
• Numbers from one to ten come up whenever you're paying, ordering or telling the time. They're some of the most practical words to memorise early.
• Common verbs: ser, estar and ter appear in nearly every sentence. Mastering their basic forms opens up simple conversation quickly.
• Question words like onde, quando and como turn passive vocabulary into active conversation skills. They're some of the most useful early additions.

These core words prepare you for the grammar and structures that come next.

Portuguese tutors in Wellington typically charge $25/h per hour.

The cost depends on:

• Your skill level and learning goals
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The number of hours booked
• Where the sessions take place

Comparing several profiles helps you find the best value.

The most effective way to learn Portuguese blends structured lessons with everyday exposure.

• Speaking practice: regular conversation, even short sessions, builds fluency faster than passive study alone. A tutor gives you a safe space to make mistakes.
• Listening exposure to Portuguese media helps you get used to natural speed and accent variation. It complements structured lessons well.
• Grammar basics: understanding verb conjugation patterns early prevents confusion later on. A tutor can explain these clearly and answer questions as they come up.
• A consistent routine keeps new vocabulary and grammar fresh in memory. Regular lessons help maintain that rhythm.

Most learners see steady progress within weeks once they combine these approaches consistently.
