In the New Zealand census of 2013, it was registered that 2% of the population of Auckland speaks at least basic te reo Maori, on the other hand, 87% of the population speaks English. Even after making Maori an official language in New Zealand, it has been difficult to increase, and even maintain, the number of Maori speakers in the country. Many schools and kindergartens have study programs where they teach Maori to their students, however, is still not mandatory to offer te reo Maori in their curriculums.
Even though in Auckland there are many public and tourism offices that have translations to te reo Maori on their signs, this is also still not a requirement. The same happens with road signs, there have been many petitions to the government to make it mandatory to have Maori translations on road signs, not only for Maori speakers to understand but also to encourage the learning of the language among the rest of the population.
According to Maori politicians, there are still not enough measures from the government that encourage the protection and learning of the Maori and to teach the population the importance of the Maori language and culture in the core of New Zealand society. Learning te reo Maori is also learning about the Kiwi culture and helping to preserve it.
Among the current initiatives from the Maori politicians to spread, show, and use the ancient wisdom of the Maori people in modern times, Auckland is the place for one of the most important and visible projects of the country: the installation of mussel ropes at Te WÄnanga. This new project started in May 2021 with the installation of ropes with green-lipped mussels attached to the underside of a public space built in downtown Auckland. The ropes with mussels are under the ferry basin at Te WÄnanga to filter the seawater and show how ancient Maori practices can help us to solve many of today's problems.
The opportunity to be raised, grow, and be part of a bilingual society is not so easy to find. There are not many countries that can offer that possibility, but New Zealand is one of the fortunate. The initiatives that started in the '80s when the Maori language was declared official in the country have been spreading since. Even if many agree that there are still not enough, in Auckland, you can find some schools and kindergartens that offer te reo Maori in their programs so you can raise your children in a bilingual environment.
The benefits of being raised bilingual are immense. It is proven that a person raised in two languages has more ability to learn other languages and can be easily become a polyglot. Even more important, the knowledge of other languages implies knowing and learning other ways to understand and confront life, which helps us to be more open-minded, accept new ideas, and create new solutions for the world we live in.
If you did not have the opportunity of learning te reo Maori when you were a student by not having all the many options that exist today or you have a very basic level, you could start your own way on the study of Maori to be part of the biculturalism in Auckland faster than you think. There are many possibilities to become a Maori student these days as starting a course in an institute, but one of the best options is to find a Maori tutor for private lessons. The best option to find a Maori tutor in Auckland is to use Superprof, you will need to go to the website of Superprof and only type "Maori lessons in Auckland" and you will see all the options available for you in the city.
