About Philip
I graduated from RADA in 2004, but started working as an actor when I was 12! Since RADA I have combined my work as an actor on stage and on screen with my passion for teaching and directing, helping to guide and advise those just entering, or considering entering, the industry. I teach and perform regularly at Shakespeare's Globe, most recently in Comedy of Errors (2023), and will be appearing as Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing which will open the Globe's 2024 season. I have directed at RADA and Drama Studio, as well as working one to one with students of all ages. I love my work as an actor and I love my work as a teacher. Currently appearing in ‘The Crown’ Seasons 5 and 6, in 'The Spanish Princess' season 2 as Thomas Wolsey, cardinal to Henry VIII! and 'Whitstable Pearl'. Currently starring in Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe until 29th August 2024 HIGHLIGHTS 16 different productions as an actor at Shakespeare's Globe. Last year at The Globe (2022) I played 10 different parts, script in hand, no rehearsal, in Macbeth, Much Ado and The Tempest! No understudies at the Globe, they would call me in last minute if somebody was off! Working with David Suchet in The Importance of Being Earnest in the West End 2016. Working with Martin Freeman in Richard III in the West End in 2015 Work at The RSC in Stratford-Upon-Avon Acting in ITV's Girlfriends alongside Miranda Richardson and Zoe Wanamaker. Teaching at RADA and East 15 drama schools. Performing on screen in THE CROWN (Two Seasons), THE SPANISH PRINCESS (Two seasons) for STARZ playing Thomas Wolsey Working on The Sam Wanamaker Festival leading workshops on performing Shakespeare with students from all the major drama schools. Guiding several students to places at top drama schools including RADA.

LESSONS WILL BE TAUGHT ONLINE OVER ZOOM, OR IN A GREAT REHEARSAL SPACE - THE FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE IN HAMPSTEAD. Fully DBS (CRB) checked. I have helped students gain places at RADA, Guildhall and other top drama schools. I also work in partnership with Mason Gross School of the Arts in NJ USA, a prestigious drama school whose third year actors spend six months training in London. Alongside my acting work, I have run workshops and directed courses with children and young people at Shakespeare's Globe for the past 13 years. I also direct Shakespeare and modern text presentations at RADA, and Drama Studio London. Performing speeches, modern or classical, can be daunting. Approaching Shakespeare can be intimidating. It needn't be. I want my students to obtain total ownership of the language, of their characters, and their performance. I use my years of experience and professional exercises to unlock the text and create heartfelt and truthful performances. I also have huge experience in auditioning and working within the industry in all fields so I can shape work accordingly. Above all I want my actors to enjoy themselves and learn to love their work as much as possible. I can help with all drama school audition prep, as well as advise on how to conduct auditions and interviews etc. We can also work on poetry, storytelling and LAMDA exam work. Whatever is most applicable to you or your children.

Perfect! Great Tutor, really helpful with breaking down sides I've been given. Really insightful in approaching my audition pieces. Worked with Philip a few times now and I've felt confident tackling my tapes everytime! Thank you!
Perfect! I could not recommend Philip enough. My son worked with Philip to prepare for drama school auditions, and with his expertise and guidance my son went to his audition full of confidence and with scenes that were far more nuanced and truthful than they had been previously. I have appreciated his swift and clear communication, and my son looks forward to working further with Philip in the future.
Perfect! I've been working with Philip for a few weeks now, and it's been amazing. He transforms the seemingly daunting task of working on Shakespeare's works in your second language into an accessible, meaningful, and fun journey. He genuinely cares about his students and their work. I highly recommend him to both beginners and professionals.
Perfect! I couldn’t recommend Philip enough. After taking a few years off, the prospect of returning to acting was slightly daunting for me, but Philip couldn’t have made it easier. Immediately after the first session I felt comforted and confident to tackle a number of auditions I had lined up. Ultimately, I think his success lies in being endlessly encouraging, whilst still providing constructive, focused and incisive feedback. He strikes the perfect balance between pushing the actor to elevate their monologues one step further, without making them feel under pressure. He also manages to create an incredibly positive and productive working environment. As an aspiring actor, I feel more in control, confident and hopeful about the future.
Perfect! Philip is a brilliant acting coach!
The lessons are always so well organised. He really targets all aspects needed to create life full performances. He has an incredible eye for detail and can really pick out great moments for you to discover. His passion and knowledge really shine through and he can communicate his teachings in a way that is easy to understand and relateable.
My confidence in acting has really started to take flight thanks to Philip!Perfect! Philip is an excellent tutor who I would highly recommend to anyone! He has really focused on specific ways for me progress in my acting abilities, and always goes about this in a very fun and interesting fashion. He is a super teacher who has made me feel comfortable in our lessons and thanks to his excellent tuition I have been able to get onto a BA Acting course at a school of my choice.
- Philip's response :
Perfect! Philip is a wonderful teacher. With a few sessions he turned my ten year old from someone who’d memorised poems but never acted before into a genuinely good actor - it was wonderful to watch. He is working with him on LAMDA and Shakespeare. His demeanour is gentle and very encouraging, and his approach is to ask questions with a sense of curiosity, inspire rather than order, and work thoroughly with the text so it brings out the natural skill of the child rather than anything that feels artificial or pressured. He’s flexible and works with the child and their circumstances. He is a wonderful teacher as well as a skilled actor and director currently working on projects and my child loves working with him. Highly recommended.
Perfect! Phillip is incredible! I've always struggled with approaching Shakespeare and delivering it in a engaging way but after only having a few sessions with him I feel so much more confident with it and he has really helped me to loosen up and just go for it! He's so knowledgeable and you will really learn a lot and grow as an actor by having sessions with him.
Perfect! Philip is a fantastic tutor. I felt really at ease with him and was introduced to a very fresh perspective of Shakespeare, in which he has a lot of knowledge. He also included other elements which helped bring the work to life more during our sessions. It’s been a pleasure to work with him, and I’ve felt safe and never worried about being judged. I’d recommend highly!
EylulPerfect! Philip has been tutoring me for my drama school auditions. I’ve been extremely impressed with his professionalism, patience and teaching. His tips and strategies are proving helpful but more importantly, he is working with a pace that has suited my skillset. My confidence grows with every session and I can most definitely see an improvement from when I started.
I can highly recommend Philip to anyone looking for an acting coach/teacher!Perfect! We couldn't start because of coven but he was incredibly kind.
- Philip's response :
Perfect! An absolutely fantastic tutor, who always helps and guides exploration and risk taking with monologues, whilst also preparing you for performing them for real in auditions. Philip always puts you at ease and helps you with understanding the continual process that speeches require, as well as giving advice on different monologues. The work he does is incredibly detailed with both Shakespeare and modern speeches, and gives you confidence in the work you do. More than this, is that any nerves of 'performing' are totally taken away, and with the sessions I am constantly surprised by not only how much I discover, but how much I enjoy it. Have recommended, and will continue to do so.
- Philip's response :
Perfect! Philip is one of the best acting tutors I have worked with. His approach to your monologues is so detailed and has really transformed my monologues by working in depth on the texts and performance. Philip has also instilled a great level of confidence in me for auditioning. It has been an absolute joy working with Philip to explore my texts and better my performance where I can confidently say that Philip has taken my performance to a new level. I highly recommend Philip to anyone auditioning for drama school or acting coaching.

Philip is a highly skilled actor and tutor. His experience and love for the craft shines through in all his work. He has support me and help me grow as a professional actor. His insight and ability to guide you in getting results is why i would recommend him.
My daughter was a member of the Globe Young Players a few years ago and performed at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse when Phil was an acting coach on the team. She is now a professional actress and benefited hugely from Phil's advice and encouragement. She remembers how excellent he was at treating everyone as an individual and bringing out their latent skills. I would recommend Phil to anyone who needs encouragement and confidence. His considerable skill as an actor is communicated and shared with his pupils.
I learned so much off Philip while working with him at The Globe Theatre, I was a new actor straight out of drama school and it was my first job, he was extremely knowledgeable and I looked up to him. He was always on hand to help me with text and historical context, and assist in making apt choices. He was a ridiculously calming influence and great fun to be around.
I first met Philip at the Globe Theatre in 2007 when he was playing Bassanio; most recently he was Banquo in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse over the winter. He is a wonderful actor and I personally remember him as being outstanding in Comus (SWP) and in The Importance at the Vaudeville.
Philip is also a teacher and his openness, and his theatrical instincts makes him a very fine one. In 2011 the Globe funded me and three actors, Philip being one, to study Shakespeare's verse and how we instinctively breathe during speech. I learnt much from him at that time.
I would recommend that everyone, if they have the chance, to see Philip at work, or better still to work with him.
Giles Block (Globe Associate, Text, 1999-now.)I have known Philip for a decade. In all my dealings with him I have found him to be honest, exacting, principled and generous of spirit. He is also an extremely fine actor himself. I have no hesitation in recommending him as a teacher.
Phil was an excellent acting coach, who always made me feel very comfortable and confident in what I was doing. His extensive knowledge meant that he always knew how to get the best natural performance out of me. Would highly recommend him to anyone of all levels of acting ability!
Philip is a fantastic teacher! He has helped me over the last few years get a real understanding of what it is to be an actor, he is always encouraging and always there to help.
I would recommend Philip to anyone who is interested in either improving their ability or taking it to the next level. I wouldn't be where I am today without his help.A while back, I took part in a 2 hour Shakespeare workshop at The Globe with Philip. I was genuinely surprised by how much I learnt in two hours - the general spirit of it was fast-paced, try-it-out and get it wrong, and he mixed rhythm & movement based exercises with the heart of the session: what it means to speak Shakespeare instinctively, openly and audibly. And without too much worrying.
I recommend Philip as an outstanding choice for any younger actor looking to hone & deepen their craft - he certainly helped me!
Edwin Thomas, Actor.Philip is a great actor and has a lot of experience working with students of all ages.
Tom Davey, Shakespeare’s Globe Learning ConsultantPhilip and I have worked together twice. He is an extraordinary actor and a brilliant man. I have rarely met anyone who can make Shakespeare so understandable and the language so accessible. He’s the best. X
As an actor and facilitator I have worked with Philip on many occasions his talent and dedication to his craft is second to none. He brings this along with great skill and passion when sharing his knowledge with a student.
Philip is an excellent actor, experienced tutor and a great communicator.
Highly recommend. My favourite tutor, And I’ve had a few.x
As a West End theatre director, I’ve been lucky enough to work with Philip twice (in ARTURO UI and THE BEST MAN). He’s an actor with that rare blend of creative insight and deft technique. Whether you’re looking to improve your craft, and need some handles on the technicalities of voice/text/movement; or your want to free your imagination and help yourself make more adventurous, exciting choices... Philip is your man. He’s also an infuriatingly nice guy, which is unfair.
Phil is one of the best verse speakers around. On top of that he is passionate about theatre and that love is infectious. He’s an incredible coach.
On a brief acquaintance I could see as an acting and creative arts tutor of over twenty years experience that Philip was a knowledgeable and committed acting professional able to pass on a level of craft and technique necessary to all of those interested in pursuing this profession. At a time when the cult of celebrity threatens to obscure notions of craft Phillip is able to take students back to the source.
David Erdos former head of acting bird College, city of Westminster College, genesis theatre schools etc alI have directed Philip on a number of occasions: he is wonderfully warm and open and inventive and conscientious. These qualities are eminently transferable to teaching: he is one of the best actors I know of his generation, and frankly I would love to have acting lessons with him, because I am sure I would learn lots.
Philip is one of the most inspiring, dedicated and extraordinarily talented actors I know. His incredible wealth of experience, patience, good humour and expertise makes him the perfect teacher for anyone seriously interested in progressing to drama school or entering the acting profession.
Christopher LoganA fantastically calming presence and an astute eye for where I might be able to improve on the weaker areas of my work. I can safely say that, after working with Phil, I was a much improved actor.
I have worked with Phil as an actor and have always been struck by his deep understanding of and sensitivity towards text, as well as towards performance. He is an excellent actor and teacher, and has a real ability in managing communication of complex and sometimes difficult ideas. I would recommend him very highly.
Charlie EdwardsPhilip’s grasp of classical theatre is second to none. I have rarely seen such skill at verse speaking on stage. If it’s someone with real world theatrical experience, a deftness of precise performance yet someone who can make that accessible to all - Phil is your man.
I've had the pleasure of witnessing Phil work with young people and he is a fantastic tutor. His knowledge and passion are utterly inspiring. What's great is that he's working at the highest level of the industry, so you're getting an actor with a wealth of experience and insight. Couldn't recommend highly enough.
Phil is an excellent actor and drama teacher. He taught me while I was at drama school and I learnt so much while we worked together. His knowledge of classical and modern text is extensive, added to which he is friendly, approachable and fun. I couldn’t recommend him enough.
Philip is a fantastic teacher. He is clear, compassionate and has a deep understanding of, and passion for, acting. Would highly recommend.
Philip is an exceptional actor and a truly lovely person. I have worked with him professionally in several productions, in particular at Shakespeare’s Globe, and both his agility and his understanding of the space, the text and the audience are extraordinary. His calm and gentle presence would make him a wonderful teacher. I highly recommend him.
I worked with Philip at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and watched him officiate several workshops with students from all across the world. He has a vast knowledge of Shakespeare and an incredible ability to work with people of all different ages and capabilities. He is boundlessly enthusiastic, inspirational, talented and, most importantly, he makes learning fun. I wholeheartedly recommend him.
