About Michelle

With 19 years experience, I developed the Gale Method to train international clients in confident English. My name is Michelle Gale, and I've had the privilege to train clients around the world, from China to Oxford University to Australia. Each student has transformed their English skills to excel in corporate, academic and international roles, truly transforming their educations and careers. Plus, they take that English confidence and elevate their social life, relationships, and everyday interactions, beyond the business school classroom or corporate board room. I love my work. I love teaching clients how to tap into their own confidence and excel in every area that English language touches. I only work with clients over 16 who are clear on their motivation for learning English. I have special courses for diplomats, C-Suite execs, business school students and IB students working to enter Ivy League schools.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

It's funny-I started out just trying to help people, and it took off from there. My interest really started almost two decades ago when I was working and studying for my masters degree in London. I started advertising my English classes and got loads of interest - but surprisingly, most of my clients were professionals who had completed *years* of English classes, had great jobs or were going for impressive interviews, but their accents, grammar and speaking clarity needed improvement. I saw how important it was for my clients to communicate confidently and clearly, especially when it came to pronunciation. They felt stunted, like English was a mask they were wearing, and they couldn't be themselves or feel natural in English even after SO many years of classes and SO many years of working / living in an English speaking context. After just one or two classes with me, they were shocked. I remember one client just laughing, as an English sound that had illuded her (maybe it was "th", maybe it was a strong "R") suddenly came clearly out of her mouth. Then another client worked on his English confidence and presentation skills with me, and he was able to snag that job he'd been preparing for - he was over the moon. That's when I realized how much I loved helping people express themselves authentically. Private tutoring became my way to do this on a personal level and really make a difference in someone's life and career.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I focus on teaching English communication-pronunciation, fluency, and confidence. What I love most is working on creative problem-solving and helping students unlock their authentic voices. It's so exciting to see people transform when they start feeling good about how they sound. The one thing I don't love as much? Maybe un-teaching some of what students learned from well-meaning but non-native teachers. I feel frustrated on the client's behalf, but it's okay because helping them say it right for the first time is such a great feeling!!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely. I've had a few mentors who really shaped how I think about communication. They had this incredible ability to make people feel confident and understood, and I admired that so much. They taught me that language is about more than just words-it's about making connections. That's stuck with me ever since.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

First and foremost, you've got to care about your students' success and really *see* their personality. You need to be patient, adaptable, and encouraging. Everyone learns differently, so I think being able to customize lessons is key. A good tutor also helps you see your potential even when you can't. It's all about building that confidence in a way that feels personal and meaningful. I'm rooting for my students even months or years after finishing with them, it's a real privilege to see how far they go and how confident they become. New jobs, new promotions, new degrees, it all fuels me and I love to hear their news and keep in touch. Sometimes I'll get a message from a student I taught 10 years ago, and they let me know what's new in their lives - I celebrate every one of their wins as though it were my own!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I once worked with a high-level, extremely motivated insurance professional who was really self-conscious about his accent. It was holding him back from feeling fully authentic and confident. He'd just been passed over for a promotion to VP and was low-key devastated, because he told me he could see the look on the interviewer's face as he got distracted by my client's pronunciation. I reassured him this wasn't his fault - lots of non-native teachers impart English language tools that don't serve us as we get to higher levels in our lives and careers. We worked together, and his confidence skyrocketed. This impacted not just his pronunciation, but his manner in day-to-day life. I think it even improved his dating game, because he felt more confident talking to people socially too. He told me working together was a huge breakthrough for him, and honestly, it was for me too. Moments like that remind me why I do this.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One challenge is helping people break the mindset that their accent or fluency will always hold them back. I hear it all the time: "I'll never sound like a native speaker." That kind of thinking can really block progress. My job is to show them that not only is improvement possible, but it's easier than they think with the right techniques and mindset. Also, your accent is beautiful. Every accent is! Our job is just to make sure you can speak clearly and your listeners can understand you seamlessly.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Honestly, my passion is helping people discover their authentic voice, feeling natural in English just like they do in their mother tongue. It's not just about pronunciation; sometimes it's about feeling that whoosh of confidence that comes from knowing you've got the right tools, the same or even better tools than everyone else in the room. Sometimes it's about showing themselves and their listeners they have something valuable to say and giving them the tools to say it with confidence. Seeing someone go from self-doubt to self-assured? That's my favorite part of what I do.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I think it's my approach-I've spent almost 20 years fine-tuning what I call the Gale Method. It's a mix of creative techniques and real-world strategies that get results fast. I've worked with people in the media, executives and VPs, MBA students, professionals all over the globe - my students don't just learn how to speak better; they walk away with the confidence to achieve their goals. Plus, I really care about their success, and I think that makes all the difference.
