About Daniella

I'm an English tutor, holding a first-class degree from the University of Edinburgh. (Ranked top 10 globally and top 3 in the UK for English Literature, QS World University Rankings 2024).

Before becoming a tutor I worked in the technology sector, spending my most of my time behind a screen. After feeling disconnected, I turned to literature and rediscovered a passion that I currently have the privilege of calling a career.

Today, I see literature as a critical to the development of well-rounded, young adults. It teaches them skills that will serve them far beyond the classroom, such as:

- How to express their opinion clearly
- How to disagree diplomatically
- How to identify bias in language (and consider its impact within the media, for example)

FREE CONSULTATION

During our free consultation, I will ask for a recent piece of work and provide :

1) An overview of the student's strengths and weaknesses
2) Essay feedback
3) Recommendations for future improvement
4) Suggested areas to inform future lessons

APPROACH

My approach to teaching is highly tailored, taking into consideration the student’s interests, natural strengths and other GCSE subjects to deliver my lessons. I work with the ‘bigger picture’ in mind, encouraging students to connect their present study of English with their goals outside the classroom. I have found this helps with providing motivation, particularly during stressful periods such as mocks and exam season.

LESSON STRUCTURE

I do lessons remotely and set weekly homework via Google Classroom to support your child's learning outside lesson time. If this sounds like a service that you would be interested in, please do get in touch to organise a free consultation.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    Around the age of 8, after discovering Roald Dahl's fairytales. 📖 I started tutoring as a side-hustle in 2022, alongside my graduate day job in Tech. What began as a way to reconnect with literature quickly became a full-time project, and I had to make a choice between remaining in corporate or pursuing my passion. ⚖️ Much to my parents' dismay, I chose the latter, mainly for the flexibility of travelling and the ability to experiment with entrepreneurship, which has led me to start a second business in e-commerce. ✈️
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

    Poetry is my bread and butter, for sure. 🥪 I'm also big on teaching students why works are written. I.e: for what purpose they exist (other than to torture GCSE and A Level students of course.) Likes :

    * Of Mice and Men 🧑🏼‍🌾🐭
    * Shakespeare tragedies 🎭
    * 19th Century novels 🪶
    * Creative writing 💭
    *A QA & Edexcel IGCSE exam boards ✍️
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Subject Expertise & Emotional Intelligence.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    Some books are boring. Simple as. 😴 But the biggest issue is when this boredom creates a laziness or lack of discipline. (I think picking up poor habits affect students far beyond English, or the classroom). (Chat GPT is great and all, but it cannot sit the exam for you… at least not yet…) 🤖
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    I love to dance - especially to salsa and reggaeton music. 💃🏻
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

    That's up for you to decide! (But I'd say my knowledge of Gen Z and Alpha lingo is pretty solid) 🤟
