About Kirsty

I am an experienced secondary English teacher, with 6 years teaching experience, who is currently on maternity leave but keen to continue showcasing my passion for English, whilst helping others to find their success with it too. I have helped hundreds of students - at differing abilities, change their mindset around what can be an extremely challenging subject, achieving a pass rate of Grade 5+ at GCSE, enabling them to reach their next steps after secondary education. I have experience teaching the following literary texts at GCSE level: Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, Frankenstein, An Inspector Calls, Animal Farm and the Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology. I have also attended training for teaching AQA exam specification. I believe in the power of education to shape lives and empower individuals. Teaching English allows me to make a positive impact by fostering a love for learning, nurturing analytical thinking, and helping students reach their full potential.

About the lesson

With 6 years of experience as a secondary English teacher, I adopt a student-centred approach to tutoring. I strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where students feel supported and motivated to excel in their studies. Through personalised instruction and targeted feedback, I aim to enhance their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. I typically like to focus on building confidence by developing exam skills through working on exam papers and mark schemes, whilst unpicking example answers and how they address the exam boards assessment objectives (AO’s). This is all underpinned by rich conversations about the texts, to develop analytical skills, which will allow us to make contextual inferences and consider how and why the author made the literary decisions they did and how they are relevant to a modern reader. Lessons with me usually last 1 hour, but if a pupil felt like they would prefer a longer lesson, for example, if they want a longer revision session the day before their exam, I am more than happy to do this as well. Let’s embark on an exciting learning journey together!

Perfect! Kirsty was professional, friendly and after a few months of tutoring improved my child's grades at gcse from a level 5 in English literature and a level 3 in English language to a level 7 and a level 4. Perfect! Kirsty has been an amazing and has made the process really easy and has been easy to contact when I have had any questions. Kirsty has been providing tutoring lessons to my daughter and made my daughter feel extremely comfortable and my daughter looks forward to their lessons together. Kirsty hadls taken the time to find out what my daughter found difficult with English GCSE and has supported my daughter with that area as well as refreshing on all parts of English required for her GCSE.
