  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My teaching subject is English and my interest goes down memory lane when I was probably three or four years old. I used to visit my grandparents in Kerala. My grandpa was the only one who knew English in the village. I used to see books of grammar, literature, and novels stacked in his old wooden cupboard. He used to share these books with us because we lived in Bangalore and he knew that we went to an English medium school for education. At home, my Dad too, although he would seldom meet us due to his work commitments, he would converse in English with my sister and me.

After my preschooling, my mother wanted the best school for me and what could be better than The Frank Anthony Public School{FAPS} Bangalore. The teachers and the institution was a reputed name that all knew well.
Students from the vernacular medium too were welcome in the school. It took little/no time to get acclimatised with the teachers who were mostly Anglo Indians. Their skills in English were so profound that even a Shakespeare’s play or William Wordsworth poem was made so simple and relatable that we can recall till date.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

The inspiration to teach begins at school. As kids, we would march into school, sometimes with a forlorn look then - the minute we would learn our teachers heels tiptoe in the silent corridor & see them in a well fitted blouse/shirt and crisply ironed pleated skirt, well groomed hair and with a dazzling smile the words “ Good morning dear children “ they would say and the response would be with another dazzling smile. And thats when it struck a chord in my heart that whenever I grow up I want to be a teacher of this sort. All the time at school went by watching our teachers correcting every single error without a whimper. Always and ever-willing to train us in the path of the knowledge. they have sown the seeds of a noble profession in my mind/heart.
  • How does your work help society?

Today, I realise the hard work my teachers and parents have put in to chisel me into this fine individual that I am . Whenever I'd speak to anyone, they would say “your English is so fine, why can't I speak like you ? Somewhere I realised it's important for
me to share the knowledge and I began with teaching my house-help’s children. They learnt spoken and written English from me and it makes me proud that today they are working with some of the top companies like TCS , Infosys etc .Slowly, I began to tutor other children from the neighbouring areas and they too began to show better results in school as understanding of the language brought about ease in their academics. I realised that I have somehow imbibed the qualities of my teacher, as I too carry the same dazzling smile that they flashed us and the kids and adults who learn from me tell me 'we love you' as you are never grumpy and you understand all our hassles with the language.
After a while, I had to take a maternity break. I had my own kids to teach but they would keep suggesting to me to teach and say “ you have the skill & patience so go out and reach for the stars” .

My parents, teachers and daughters are my motivation for me to be here and definitely a Big Thank You to Superprof for giving me the stage to showcase my talent.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

My role model is my Grade 3 Teacher Ms.Rodrigues. She was an epitome of elegance, beauty, poise and perfection. Her style of teaching was something that I cannot forget till date. Her smile would brighten up and elevate our mood. She was patient with all the students and never lost her temper.

Her uniqueness was that all students followed her instructions always and completed their homework before time. Her magnetism and charm was not just in the way she looked but was in the way she would present things to the students and thats why she’s my role model and I am inspired till date.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

My hobbies include music, dance and meditation. Music can be anything from Indian Classical to Western Pop, Bollywood to Hollywood , KPop to Indipop. I love to dance and sway to most party tunes whether Bhangra or Bollywood. Though I’m not professionally trained in either music or dance. I love to hear music and dance to most foot-tapping numbers on the playlist. Meditation occupies a special place in my daily regime . It helps me calm down and take it easy and it lets my ego “ go” and merge with the divine love. Whenever, I get time after teaching and before retiring to bed dedicating fifteen minutes to meditate is a norm for me. It helps me to stay grounded and beautiful mentally .
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

Teaching is an experience, a journey to cherish with memories. I have students of all ages between 5 to 73 years. My eldest student aged 73 years is learning Spoken English from me to improve her skills as her grandchildren would mock her for not speaking right. I truly admire her for her determination to learn in this age. But my memory would never fade to this 5 year old who was from California (USA). In the initial days he was so shy that he would hide behind his Dad during class hours and then slowly after a couple of sessions he got used to me and my teaching. Later on, as days passed into months, he slowly began to call me names like 'Rekha darling, don't get annoyed! I did not do my homework'. I was lost in his cuteness of him saying those words that I cannot forget him.
I can never be tired of teaching, as children are immensely bundled with energy and honest smiles. All they need is love and a good teacher, I am sure that I am truly a devoted, dedicated and a fun loving teacher who wants all her students to excel in English for sure, but also find success in all that they do.
Thanking Superprof once again for giving me such a wonderful arena.
