About Camille

I've taught ESL for over 20 years and to students from many different countries. I have also taught Portuguese as a second language with much success. Teaching is a pleasure to me! I come from a multicultural background. My mother is Brazilian and my father American. My first language was English, I studied in both American and Brazilian schools and am completely bilingual, having full command of English and Portuguese! I have taught in colleges in the US and also for several years in Brazil. The ability to reach students online has made teaching even better for me, since I am able to assist people at a click of a button! I understand the needs of immigrants having to deal with many challenges learning a new language. I have prepared several students to enter the workforce in the US. I have helped many students prepare for job interviews. I am also well qualified to help you pass your US citizenship test. I have had many students who want to learn English to sharpen their cognitive abilities, improve their work qualifications, or be able to travel communicating with people all over the world. I have traveled throughout South America and love meeting people from different countries and cultures. Teaching abroad is an enriching experience that I see as an asset to improve the quality of teaching, especially to students of diverse multicultural backgrounds. Completing my master's degree in teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language offered me competence to address students’ individual language learning needs. I have taught all levels of English and Portuguese. I owned a successful language course in Brasília, Brazil, for 16 years, only closing the physical space when I was no longer able to keep the school open due to Covid restrictions. From then on, I have been working online with much success. I teach all aspects of language: speaking, listening, reading, writing regardless of your level and am sure I can help you reach your language goals. U will speak fluently with confidence! My students enjoy my classes, feeling happy with their development and results!

My classes are lively and include activities that make them useful and interesting. All lessons are personalized to meet your specific needs and objectives. The best way to learn a language is by practicing it as much as possible. It can be challenging, but it also can be fun! During class we will watch videos, read articles and news, listen to interviews, music, movie clips, documentaries, etc. We'll develop your skills so you can interact with confidence! Classes are prepared so that you speak a lot! Correcting students is an important aspect of learning, so I offer constructive feedback in class. It’s learning through our mistakes that we improve! As a university professor, I taught many students VESOL (vocational ESOL) to them ready for the workplace and I can help you write a resume and address your vocational needs. I also helped students prepare for their citizenship test. I have experience teaching students of all ages, from beginners to advanced, children and adults. Since I am bilingual, I have taught Portuguese to foreigners wishing to move to Brazil, improve their Portuguese language skills, conduct business deals and/or work alongside Brazilian companies and organizations. Whichever language you need help in, I am sure you will love studying with me! If u have any questions, do contact me! I look forward to helping you become fluent in English or Portuguese!

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I initially learned English with my parents, at home. That is the language spoken within my family. So English was learned because of my origins. My father is American and my mother Brazilian, daughter of an American mother and Brazilian father. I would consider my family group to be a blend of cultures, where we were exposed to two different cultures and immersed in two languages simultaneously! By being born in Brazil and having Brazilian relatives on my mother´s side, I learned Portuguese along with English, speaking, reading and writing well in both languages.

  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Regarding the Brazilian culture, I believe the Saci Pererê would be a folklore character that well represents Brazil. He is a mischievous small one-legged boy that smokes a pipe and has magical abilities. He moves in a whirlwind and plays tricks on people. He wears a red cap. Legend tells that if one can grab his cap, he will need to do whatever you wish. An American alternative to the Saci Pererê would be the leprechaun that is a type of fairy,
that has become part of American culture, borrowed from Irish culture. The character is commonly depicted as a tiny, bearded man wearing a green waistcoat, buckled shoes, and a top hat. In traditional tales, leprechauns are shoemakers. Like the Saci Pererê, they are mischievous and are not to be trusted, as they love playing tricks on people. On the other side of the coin, however, their deviousness makes them lucky; they will grant three wishes to anyone crafty enough to catch them!

  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I think each language has expressions that reflect their culture. ¨Boto fé¨in Portuguese is slang used to say I agree, or believe something is good, I have faith and trust something will have a positive outcome. In Brazil, it is common to kiss people you meet, on the cheeks. Brazilians are friendly people and enjoy celebrating with friends and family. They are very welcoming of foreigners, and this helps people feel more relaxed and at ease. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and I think that is a beautiful celebration where we may reflect on all we are grateful for in life. Life is precious and I value when cultures celebrate important dates such as Independence Day and other national holidays.

  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking English opens many doors. It has become an international language and people all over the world use English to communicate, conduct business and socialize. Knowing English makes it possible to meet people from varied cultures and also makes it much easier to travel to different countries, as it is difficult to go somewhere and not find someone who speaks English that can help you should you need assistance. English also opens many doors professionally, which is a definite plus. Now regarding Portuguese, I believe it is a beautiful language and the language spoken by part of my family. Brazil is the biggest country in South America and knowing Portuguese, which is a sister language of Spanish, also helps communicate with people from other countries in South America and other Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries since Portuguese and Spanish share many words.

  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I believe the first aspect of language learning is listening. As newborn babies, barely able to see, all we can do is listen and gradually make sense of what we hear. Sounds become words and words gain meaning. So, in order to learn any language, one must make sure they have access to listening to the target language, spoken by varied people of varied backgrounds, with different accents and talking about several topics. It´s also important to practice speaking, especially with the help of a native speaking teacher who will be able to help the student make sense of the language, correct mistakes and show the cultural aspects that pertain to the language being learned, while checking pronunciation and encouraging fluency. Finally reading and writing completes the steps to mastering the language.

  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was twelve, I became a close friend to a Japanese girl, Michiyo. She once invited me to a birthday slumber party. It was a lot of fun. In the morning, her mother served us breakfast. I was expecting to find some bread, butter, cheese, milk and maybe some fruit, but her mother served fish soup with algae! And some other strange things I still have no idea what they were! With that I learned that different people eat different things for breakfast. Coming to think of it, her breakfast was probably much healthier than the breakfast I was expecting to have. When she realized I did not know what to do about the fish smelling soup, she just laughed and laughed. We´re friends until today and that is one of the funny memories we share!

  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I love travelling. Having lived for 20 years in the US, another 20 years in Brazil and now finally back in the US, has helped me see up close many things related to the culture within each country, and how language is impacted and by culture. Languages are alive and change as the years pass, borrowing words from other languages or creating words. The United States is a country with immigrants from so many places and I have seen how words that belonged to another culture have become part of the daily lives of people here. Technology has also contributed to the increase of words everywhere. English has become a global language and wherever you go you find people that speak English, with whom you can communicate. Travelling to Spanish speaking countries in South America and even living in states in the US with a large Hispanic population has made me aware of how Spanish is similar to Portuguese, which makes it possible to understand and communicate with Spanish speaking people.

Eu amo viajar.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Having been born learning two languages simultaneously helped a great deal. My mother is a teacher, and my aunt was a teacher/translator as well. I believe both, through their example, showed me the value of teaching, being able to reach out to students who want to learn to communicate well in their target language. I love what I do, love meeting people and teaching brings me much joy. Since I love what I do, teaching does not feel like work at all, it’s a very rewarding experience!
