Psychology is an immense field with a range of possibilities to specialise in. In its simplest form, it is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. Often we think of the objective of studying Psychology is to become a psychologist. While this is one part of studying Psychology, there are also other options such as becoming a researcher in the field of Psychology who conducts scientific research on a range of topics.

There is a range of higher education providers who teach Psychology across New Zealand. Once you know what you want to study, it is important to figure out where is the best place for you to do that.

This decision can be made through a variety of factors such as specialisation options, international reputation, fees, cost of living within the city, accessibility, you name it. It is important that you create a list of what is important to you and work out what you are and are not flexible about.

Once you have your list of wants and musts sorted out, it is time to check out what Christchurch, Wellington, Tauranga, Hamilton, Manukau City and Auckland have on offer for you.

Requirements for Studying Psychology at University in New Zealand

To attend these universities, there is a range of requirements you must meet. It is easier to explain the requirements when you start with the basics. You are either a domestic or international student. Domestic students are those who are either;

a New Zealand citizen; or the holder of a residence class visa granted under the Immigration Act 2009 who satisfies the criteria (if any) prescribed by regulations made under subsection; or a person of a class or description of persons required by the Minister, by notice in the Gazette, to be treated as if they are not international students.

An international student is those who do not meet the criteria listed above. These guides are directed more to domestic students but also useful information for international students. Just check the entry requirements for international students for each course. The requirements differ between subjects and the price of the course is not the same as the price for a domestic student.
