With the world-famous in New Zealand, Ōtara markets on nearly every Saturday from 6 am to 12 pm, Mangere markets, Polyfest and much more, this city is bustling with community events.

Manukau City is also home to a range of fantastic restaurants, cafes and take-away shops. Due to the multiple ethnicities who reside in this city, you can practically eat around the world all within Manukau.

Studying Psychology with Auckland University of Technology

The Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has a long history of providing world-class education. With around 19,000 full-time domestic and international students, it has three campuses spread out across Auckland. The Health Science department stands strong as Auckland Univerity of Technology is the largest and most diverse health education provider in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Located right in the heart of Manukau City, Auckland University of Technology South Campus is located 15 minutes walk from the Manukau train station and even has shuttles connecting it to the AUT city campus. For those students who wish to stay in the Manukau area, there is a range of courses available.

For those who have cars, AUT South Campus does have on-site parking for students but is it limited and you have to pay. This includes mobility parking. If you are looking to save a few dollars or are more into cycling, there are cycle racks to store your bike as well as showers and lockers for students to use.

Studying Psychology at Undergraduate Level

To major in Psychology, AUT South Campus offers a Bachelor of Health Science. Within this degree, there is a range of options for you to major in from Counselling, Occupational therapy, Public and Environmental Health and of course, Psychology.

This degree enables you to specialise in a specific health discipline such as a nurse, midwife or counsellor or become a health professional in a non-clinical role such as Health Management and Case Management.

If you are determined to study psychology you can take it as a major and you can also take courses in it. You may be wondering what is the difference. When you major in a subject there are criteria you have to meet in order to have your studies recognised, if you take psychology courses it means you study the individual course so there are no requirements, you take these courses out of interest rather than specialisation. However, if you wish to take second and third-year courses, make sure you have met the entry requirements in your 100-level course.

For those who have their heart set on a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, the shuttles can move you to the AUT City campus if you want to stay in Manukau City. If you decide to split between the campuses, make sure you have enough time between classes to make it to your classes. It is best to speak to an academic advisor so they can help you create a feasible timetable.

Studying Psychology at Postgraduate Level

The Auckland University of Technology has a range of postgraduate study options. This includes a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science that can be completed in one semester. Take your time to look at your options as there are certificates, diplomas, and master's programmes that specialise in other areas of expertise but include psychology courses.

The easy connection between the South Campus and the City Campus increases the options available to you.  If you wish to continue or start postgraduate studies, the best place to start is to talk to a careers advisor to help narrow done the potential courses that would suit your interests and goals.

Studying Psychology with Manukau Institute of Technology Te Pūkenga

With over 14,000 students, the Manukau Institute of Technology has been providing professional, vocational and technical training in Aotearoa New Zealand for more than fifty years. MIT is also one of the largest, with five campuses spread across Auckland.

As of 2023, the Manukau Institue of Technology will be a part of Te Pūkenga. Te Pūkenga is a national network that delivers skill training across Aotearoa New Zealand. This transition is to make the qualifications at MIT more consistent, portable, and more aligned with the needs of industry and the world.

For those wishing to remain in Manukau City, there is the MIT Ōtara campus, MIT Manukau Campus, and MIT Tech Park. There is also the MIT Mahurani campus in Warkworth and MIT City in Auckland Central.

Studying Psychology at Undergraduate Level

Studying psychology at the Makankau Institute of Technology can be done in a variety of ways. Unlike at other Universities, studying psychology at MIT is done through specialising in a field such as but not limited to; Social Worker, Counselling, Human Resource Management and Sport.

For example, there is a Certificate of Proficiency in Introduction to Psychology. While the name may be long the course duration is 17 weeks. This course is online with workshops at the MIT Manukau campus. The entry requirements are very specific as the idea of this certificate is that you wish to work as a counsellor. If this is something that interests you, check out the MIT website.

This course introduces students to a range of psychological theories, concepts and frameworks that are central in the counselling practice. Through this course, you can gain a deeper understanding of the social world in which we live. It covers a range of topics such as Māori and Pasifika perspectives in psychology, historical developments and much more.

The psychology courses are taught in relation to the major you have chosen. For example, to graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Management majoring in Human resources management, you have 13 compulsory courses and five elective courses. This is where the details are important, as if you decide to double major then you do not have five electric courses. This is because you need to meet the requirements of your second major. There are a lot of different pathways available to students at MIT.

If you are interested in other options for studying psychology, have a look at our guide on Auckland. With the close proximity to Manukau City, there are more choices available for students. Just remember to take into consideration how long it would take you to get there and back every day.
