This Covid19 era has changed the way we interact and as well, it’s even changed the way we are entertained. Many of you would have witnessed seeing your favourite artist’s living room, as they command your attention with their casual home concerts.

Because we are Kiwis, we are well accustomed to doing things with a ‘number 8 wire’ attitude. So, it’s not surprising that we jumped onto this new trend. Of course, the ability to go-live on sites like Instagram and Facebook has always been around, but it was heavily utilised during our lockdowns, where concerts were all cancelled.

Maybe you gazed through your phone in awe at your favourite artist, thinking that you’d like to pick up the guitar or even learn to sing? Perhaps you have the burning desire to croon Goodshirt’s song ‘Sophie’ with gusto and intrigue? Or, maybe you screamed ‘Don’t forget your roots’ boldly at a Six60 summer gig?

No matter what amazing new heights our Kiwi artists reach, it’s hard to fathom, but they did begin as learners once. Be it a first lesson learning the art of playing keys or singing a tricky vocal line; we all start from somewhere.

The most amazing thing is that you don’t have to be an incredible singer from the get-go. As you learn, you can reap unique benefits which will elevate your quality of life. These can range right through from physical to mental benefits. Right: are you curious to listen to that creative call? Are you ready to delve into what your voice has to offer? So, what will learning to sing look like for you?

Positive changes that singing lessons can offer

Kick that stress to the curb and breathe in. Now exhale

We live in a fast-paced society where we have to pack so many activities into our day. With so much on our plate it’s easy to fall into a constant wrestle of stress throughout our day. But did you know that if you sing you will actually lower your cortisol levels?  That’s right! By simply opening up your mouth and launching into a song, your body will naturally lower all that nagging stress away. Be it studying briskly for that exam or meeting your deadlines at work. Give it a try: crank up your volume and boost your mood!

Lower your stress levels, singing can be relaxing.

Nurture your mind by singing

In a similar way to the runners high or a good workout, when you sing your body releases feel-good endorphins. And guess what? You don’t have to be Adele to reap the benefits. In fact, you will feel on top-of-the-world, even if your new to singing and still learning how to control your voice. Your mental health will improve by flexing those singing muscles of yours. Let’s go! Open up that mouth and bust out ‘Rolling in the deep’: your body and mind will thank you for it.

Create a singing community or find a vocal friend

Chances are your singing teacher will have access to a whole bunch of other singers who are just like you, in the same boat. Once you’ve found your ideal singing teacher ask to be linked up with other vocalists. In the best of circumstances this can result in friendship or connection, making you more in touch with the magic of music and kindred spirits.

What will singing lessons look like for you?

As with everything, always remember that your singing life is a journey. Your voice is an instrument just as much as a guitar or any other instrument. Even though inbuilt, it still requires just as much attention and time to perfect it.

Let’s now work out what kind of singer you are. Do you like to sing softly, so the sound is situated near your head? We call that your ‘head voice’ and it’s known as being more nasal and delicate. Maybe you’re naturally inclined to use a strong, powerful voice? That’s called your ‘chest voice’ and it’s used to command attention and to give more strength. In time you will learn to navigate each aspect within your voice and use these interchangeably in a performance. Don’t worry, mastering this is something that can be done together with a voice coach. Just look at revealing your voice as a process of self-discovery and approach the experience with curiosity.

Lessons you can discover in singing

  • Get in touch with your breathing! Breathe in. Breathe out: With life constantly demanding us to be more present, sometimes we can forget to be in touch with our breathing. Drop your shoulders and let your body soak in all that fresh air. By focussing on your breath technique you will begin to gain more control in mastering those tricky long phrases. Breath support is one of the most important aspects of singing. Once you get this perfected, you’ll notice other parts of your voice improve as well.
  • Feel on top of the world: Confidence is something that you’ll learn as you progress in your singing journey. Your vocal coach will be your biggest supporter and should be cheering you on at every opportunity. To become a confident singer takes time and your tutor should be helping you nurture your voice at every stage.
  • Get your posture looking pristine:  To support your voice you need to have good posture.  This means standing up tall like an oak tree and giving your body the chance to get a large inhale. Keeping your airflow managed also ties in with having your back straight and placing your feet slightly apart. We want to hear every syllable that comes from your voice and if your schlumped, your intonation will suffer and your words might trail off. Let’s get your body relaxed, so we can hear every word you sing with confidence.
