With this unique and trying Covid 19 era there’s no doubt you’ve come across one of your favourite artists singing on a live feed, either on Facebook or Instagram.  Here the production values are lowered with the usual slick costumes being replaced with low key, almost pajama-like attire.

While watching one of these home concerts perhaps you thought what it would be like to sing as well? Did the idea of picking up the guitar or warming those vocals appeal to you? Maybe you turned up the volume, blasting L.A.B.’s In The Air Tonight. As one of the breakout singles from the summer, I’m not surprised.

Of course, all these legends have come from somewhere. Whether it be stringing four chords together in a communal flat, practicing piano or mirroring their favorite song with gusto. It’s never too late to start something new; singing could be that new discovery or hobby you’re ready to dive into. No matter your current singing level, there’s always room to grow. There are also many great benefits of singing that make it worth your while. to have a So what can singing lessons do for you?

What are some of the benefits of singing as a practice?

Shake those worries away:

Do you ever get that crawling stress feeling? The one where your cortisol levels increase, and you feel completely overwhelmed by whatever life throws at you? Rest easy: singing has been proven to lower your stress hormone levels. This makes your body and mind more at ease.  You will feel more relaxed and energized by belting out one of your favorite songs, even if for guilty pleasure alone.  So remember the next time you’re stuck in traffic when you’re singing at the top of your lungs: you are actually doing yourself a huge service.

Help boost your mental health:

Singing has been proven to help your mental health. Twenty people from the UK in 2018 participated in a study, where they did singing workshops. Each person had a range of mental health conditions. The study revealed the people received an improved sense of mood and a better sense of well-being after singing in the workshops. This is no surprise given that singing releases feel-good endorphins. You don’t even have to have an amazing, you’re boosting your mental health just by opening your mouth and unleashing your voice.

Help stimulate your immune system:

What if you could help your body and protect it from getting that pesky cold that’s lingering at the back of your mind? Well, a study on people’s immune responses showed that people who sung along to the music played for them had higher levels of an antibodies. These of course fight off infections. The people from the study who sang along with the music showed higher levels than those who simply just listened to the music. So next time you’re travelling to work, do yourself a favor; boost your immune system at the same time

So what would singing lessons look like for you?

Learning how to sing is a journey. There’s no doubt about it. Taking up singing is as intricate as any other instrument like guitar or piano. But we are lucky since we have our instrument already built in. In this way belting out notes can seem very personal as it bellows out from us and is not external like all the other instruments we use.

You will learn from lessons that there are different parts within your voice. These parts access different tones and require different sets of attention. You will learn about the ‘chest voice’, which is the louder, more powerful aspect, that provides a belting tone. On the other hand, the head voice is the soft tone and slightly more nasal. When you begin to navigate these two you then will be able to develop a ‘mix’. These is the two parts of the voice that are mixed together, providing a balance of power and subtly. But don’t fret, this will all happen over time as you and your teacher discover your voice and its natural abilities.

Finding your voice should be a fun journey, unlocking new knowledge and applying it as you get better. So, this is what you should expect to learn when you finally start the lessons:

  • Breathing is so important:

One of the most important things when crafting your voice, is learning how to breathe properly. Singing is different from talking in that we often pause in between our sentences. Ideally, when singing you will map out the right time to get those breaths in your songs as well as getting to know all about your diaphragm: the powerhouse of your breath control.

  • Confidence: Starting out, your singing should be about building your confidence. Singing teachers are there to cheer you on but also to push you to develop your talent.
  • Having excellent posture:  Singing with good posture will help your breath support as well as keep you centred. Imitate the school ruler-like stance and keep that back straight will help you a lot.
