So, what can I expect in these exams, details wise?

First off, for Section A there is Unfamiliar Text, where 2 texts will be provided for you to look at. One will be prose and the other, poetry. In one of the essays, you’ll be comparing the texts. Remember, as it’s an unfamiliar text you won’t know which the two texts are. These will be picked for you, so it’s just best to review past exam questions. For more details on past exam questions check this out.

Furthermore, in an NZQA scholarship report done on a range of students, it was noted that those who used both content and crafting of the texts ended up succeeding higher scores than those who didn’t. This means that they put just as much attention on their examples as well as their essay readability. A keyword also found in this review, was consistency. Students who developed their points and remained perceptive throughout ended up achieving top marks. If you’re wanting some tips and tricks on how to get your essay structure improved then check out this blog here. It was also noted that showing an understanding of the author’s intention or a unique nuanced discussion, helped the student’s essay stand out. And lastly, the report identified that what the examiners were looking for was an original take on the texts. Although students have not engaged with the text prior, this freshness in application really stood out to the markers.

NCEA English Exam
You can get ahead by studying past papers from NCEA English Scholarship

Next up, we have Section B which asks you to respond to literature and to the language itself. This is similar to your NCEA English exam where you know you will write something about either a film, poem, short story or tv show. This is great in the sense that you can come in with multiple and specific texts that you have memorised. For example, in a previous exam question in 2016, one of the statements was,” Films must leave space for viewers to colour in”. This is great because you can literally pick one of the films you have studied in the year and then mold your essay around the statement. This ensures you really answer the crux of the question.  In an analysis of NCEA English scholarship in 2018, it was noted those who did well, had a greater understanding of the text genre. It was also noted that the selection of text genre was important and was a determining factor for whether they could develop an understanding of the selected statement.  Again, similar to Section A, this question also demands you to approach the text in a fresh way that adds nuance to the situation.

Next up in the NCEA scholarship English exam, in Section C you are asked to explore issues in literature and language.  You’ll be given a big list of statements and it’s your job to pick the one that you can write a captivating essay with. For example, if you picked the statement, “Literature stems from a dissatisfaction with life itself”, you would need to use multiple texts to unpack what that statement truly means to you. Provided you have great examples and a unique take on that statement, you’ll be well on your way. It’s also important to mention that you need a good flair for writing. This shows that your thoughts are coherent and unique in the way you address the statement. Again, in Section C, examiners are looking for you to have writing that is sustained and consistent throughout. This helps also to make your essay both perceptive and engaging. Fundamentally, Section C asks more for your opinion than the other two sections. Provided you have backed up your opinion with brilliant examples and evidence, the examiner is wanting to see how convincing your attention to the statement goes.

You’re ready to study? Here’s where you can get good resources:

If you’re wanting to have more resources to look at before you jump into your exam, then take a look at ‘Unravelling Scholarship English’. This resource is worth the 45 dollars investment; it literally guides you through. This resource outlines more detail of what has already been discussed. It also includes a glossary of terms to help you grasp the expected lingo in the exam. If you’re wanting some free resources then check out this blog here

Another way to get ahead is by looking at the NZQA website to review all their past exams. You have access to all previous exam statements from Section A, B, and C. Not only this but you’ll also be shown each achievement standard, as well as a report on what marks each essay earned. Here it is clearly obvious what Is required to pass your scholarship exam. If you follow the outline for what the examiners are wanting, then you will be on your way to getting top marks in your exam. A good tip is to pick one of the statements from one of the sections, set aside a timer, and then try to write an essay under pressure. This will be best achieved once you have grasped all the source material and memorised unique and impactful examples.
