Speeches! Why are these important?

Speeches bring a whole bunch of transferrable skills that will help you in your everyday life. Similar to essay writing, speech delivering allows you to get effective at researching and delving into a subject. Once you have managed to formulate a clear structure and coherent train of thought, there is a sense of confidence that you will bring to the table. This confidence with speaking will allow you to be more centred when in a work setting, meeting new people and perhaps even managing them later on. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, of course, you will have two more years of perfecting your speech writing and performing skills in NCEA Level 2 and 3. Speeches help you learn to communicate more effectively and efficiently. You’ll learn to use devices like repetition, rhyme, hyperbole, alliterations as well as quotations. As well as this, learning to have command of your body language is integral to your success with relationships both professional and personal. Using eye contact and gesture to make your points really adds punch when you're chatting to people. Basically, NCEA English speeches help to make you a better, more effective and sharper communicator. And let’s be real, being a top-notch communicator never goes a miss. Yes, your teacher does see the schlump in your chair when this assessment is mentioned, it most certainly is daunting standing up in front of your classmates. But this skill will help you in many facets of your life, just trust the process and each year you will get better and better.

NCEA Level 1 English makes you channel your visual brain!

NCEA Level 1 English is important because it allows you to tap into your creative side. Depending on what you want to do after school, you are likely to be wanting to have some visual skills under your belt. This achievement standard has you do just that, utilizing colour, symbols and lettering, all to enhance a certain mood for a static image you create. Maybe you will have to have a presentation at work one day, or design a logo or maybe a flyer for a show? Here you will be able to test your visual mind. Thinking visually is just as important as making a speech or writing about a film. It teaches you to tug on human emotions and communicate a message in a more emotive way that can deepen the meaning of the receiver. And of course, in Levels 2 and 3 you will also be required to have a good knowledge of colour and symbols for when you study further into written texts, movies and craft your own media.

How about unfamiliar text?

Unfamiliar texts are important because it helps to enhance your ability on making judgements of pieces of media and texts. This is less of a necessity and more about this assessment helping you enrich your life with your relationships with texts. But yes, the groan that is heard when Unfamiliar texts gets mentioned is palpable. Lots of students question this achievement standard.

This standard covers the critical analysis of many new texts that you have not come across in your year of study. It’s designed to test your knowledge of English techniques. Why is this important? You may ask what knowing the difference between a simile and metaphor is? And you would be right if you say that this is more an embellishing aspect of language. We could still communicate without it- but I think you will find the poets and filmmakers posing quite the debate against you and even a fight perhaps if we never utilized this part of the language. Your ability to identify techniques of language means that you can see connections and make judgements. Texts are encoded with meaning and it’s your job to unravel each aspect of what the author is trying to suggest and weigh that up from your perspective. Irony, Jargon, Proverbs and other techniques used in Unfamiliar text; all help to shape our shared reality through words. You might want to use these techniques in your everyday life. In fact, I’m quite confident that Jargon will come up a lot if you are ever in a work setting and need to know specific pieces of information from an industry or field. Unfamiliar texts are all about deepening your understanding of the world around you through textual analysis. As always you will continue to sharpen your awareness and skills with this as you progress in NCEA Level 2 and 3 English.
