Congrats, you’ve made it through NCEA Level 1 English and now it’s time to sink your teeth into the next stage, that’s Level 2. Unlike Maths and Science, English is great in the sense that you can bend an answer to your will, provided you have relevant examples and quotes of course. Your job is to compose an argument that is convincing and an argument that is backed up with evidence. If you have a good memory, or simply if you study a great deal you will be set for the exams at remembering all those quotes from your studied films and texts. NCEA is helpful as you get access to all the achievement standards and can go through each one, so you clearly know and can figure out what to do and how to get your desired mark. If you’re stuck, no worries simply look up the annotated exemplars.  Wondering why English is a good skill for your career? Check this blog out here. If you are needing some assistance with writing essays, then you can take notes from this. Or how about some tips and tricks for navigating your internals?

Let's go

First up we have 91098 which is all about a written text

“Analyse specified aspect(s) of studied written text(s) perceptively, supported by evidence.”

This is an external and will be worth 4 credits if you pass. What’s required? This will be all about exploring how meaning is generated from a specific text. You will also talk about the effects that this meaning has on the audience and reader. You’ll need to be as specific as you can and learn to attribute quotes from the book to back up your claims that you make. To get those higher marks, you will need to develop a discussion that communicates these aspects clearly and in a structured way. To do this the conventions of the essay structure will be your best friend! You’ll also need to get your interpretations nailed. All your interpretations should be connected as well, to show a concise and developed essay structure. Again, to aim for that Excellence, you will want to be insightful and aim for coming up with unique interpretations that the author has embedded within the book. When it comes to the details of this you will need to think about what's called 'Aspects'. These could include the purpose, audience, structure, ideas (theme, setting, character) and the all-important language features. An example of a language feature could be the style of the text or perhaps the symbolism. Sometimes your teacher might keep it open for you to pick a drama, short story, poem or online text- but usually, they stick to picking a book as the themes are usually quite well thought out.

The written text will have you analyse a book and unpack its themes complete with great examples!

91099 will have you unpacking a Visual Text (Movie)

“Analyse specified aspect(s) of studied visual or oral text(s), supported by evidence”

This will be all about the movies! But while watching you’ll be thinking about an array of influences and meanings to unpack. This will involve exploring how meanings and effects are created within the text. Like with your written text essay your visual text essay will also need to be communicated in a clear and concise way.  This will need to follow the essay format. You will need to support your theories all throughout the essay, making sure to always use an example or a quote that’s relevant and that clearly explains your points. What are aspects you ask? These can be selected from purpose, audience, character, theme, setting etc. Or how about language features? These for film, would be things like cinematography, editing, production design and sound. What about the structure of the film? Did the director utilise a linear structure or were they more creative and did they show the beginning at the end of the film? Although most teachers will pick the film option, there is also a chance you could study an online text, radio program, tv program or oral performance.

Lets get unfamiliar with 91100

“Analyse significant aspects of unfamiliar written text(s) through close reading, supported by evidence “

This achievement standard will have you doing some close reading and be fully immersed with a range of new texts. This means that you will be interpreting meaning from a range of texts. You will need to showcase how they each demonstrate meaning. Like the written and visual texts essays, you will be analysing specific aspects. These will include things like the text’s themes, attitudes, experiences, insights, meanings etc. You’ll also throw yourself into the language features as well. These will include figurative language, syntax, style, symbolism and vocab. For those top marks, you will be looking at demonstrating some perceptiveness as well as insightfulness.

Unfamiliar text will be written in an exam environment and you will study up on topics like Language Features.

91101 Get your writing on!

“Produce a selection of crafted and controlled writing”

This standard will get you 6 credits. You will be creating your own piece of writing. This will need to be crafted in a way that develops, sustains and structures your ideas with effect. Language features will be a must and they must also be appropriate to the audience you are referencing. You will choose two pieces from an array of other drafts that you have written.  Text types could include anything from scripts, reports, articles, short fiction, essays, right through to poems and narratives.  Your ideas will be aspects like feelings, thoughts, opinions, facts and arguments. You will also need to have a good command of your spelling, punctuation and grammar.

*Clears throat* It’s time for speeches!

“Construct and deliver a crafted and controlled oral text”

This achievement standard has you planning, crafting and delivering a speech. You will need to research a topic in great detail and then plan and write a speech to say to the class. You’ll also need to sustain and structure the ideas well so that you appear convincing. Examples will be key, just like in your essays you will need to clearly formulate your quotes and facts throughout, to back up your points. It will be important for you to use oral language features. These include verbal, body and voice. This translates to using great levels of eye contact and changing the pace and volume of your voice.

“Create a crafted and controlled visual and verbal text”

For this assessment, you will be creating a static image. The visual/verbal text should develop, sustain and structure unique ideas well. As with a lot of these assessments, language features will be very important. These will need to be aimed at the audience that you are directing the image at.

91104 will have you analyse

“Analyse significant connections across texts, supported by evidence”

This will have you getting your analytical hat on and see you perceptively comment on similarities and differences with a number of different texts. Evidence will be key here, and you will need to continuously back up your claims. This will be done with at least four different texts, both visual and written.

91105 will get you coming up with your own claims from interpretations

“Use information literacy skills to form developed conclusion(s)”

This involves implementing a systematic exploration into a significant area for inquiry, with the goal being to form conclusions. The process includes being authentic and having relevant context. You’ll also need to pose the question well and with impact to set the rest of your inquiry in good light. Evaluating the usefulness and reliability of the information will also be important.

Get personal with 91106

“Form developed personal responses to independently read texts, supported by evidence”

This will have you seeking to find independent texts for you to closely analyse. Your personal responses will need to be perceptive and insightful in nature. As always evidence will be a big contributing factor at play.

91107 is next up!

“Analyse aspects of visual and/or oral text(s) through close viewing and/or listening, supported by evidence “

This will be all about your own interpretations of texts. This will derive from ideas that could include beliefs, themes, experiences, insights or attitudes. You’ll also need to reference language features again.
