About Jaclyn
Hey there! I am Jaclyn. I recently completed my Undergraduate Degree in Indigenous Studies and French as a Second Language (FSL) at Trent University in Peterborough, ON. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Education with those two subjects as my teachables at the Intermediate/Senior level. Now on to the more personal side of myself. I have always been a goofy human who has a dry sense of humor and work my hardest to keep the energy in the room light. The classroom environment I facilitate is no different. I want my students to feel safe in these spaces and feel they belong there. As someone with A.D.D., I understand that traditional educators teaching AT students is not effective, so I want to be the teacher I wish I had and create a shared learning space where students can use land-based education and experiential learning in both subjects I teach. Though I am going to teach grades 7-12, I have no problem adapting my teaching to students below these grade levels. I am not here to push you until your brain cannot take any more information in every lesson. I am here to give you the learning at your own pace, simply meet you where you are at, and go from there. Small wins in education are big wins to me. I understand learning is not a linear process, and some subject matter may be harder to absorb than others, but I am hoping to at least give you some tools to find a way to personalize the knowledge in a way that you feel more comfortable absorbing.

I typically work remotely with students and can even create asynchronous lessons if the student relies on a recording of any lesson for future use. I will work with my student to find a weekly schedule that is convenient for both parties' availability. As mentioned in my title, I am studying to teach Intermediate (Grades 7 & 8) and Senior (Grades 9-12) levels. I have much experience working within the Special Education department and was raised by a Superintendent of Special Education, so I take individualized learning very seriously. I am a Francophone woman of Acadian, Irish, Scottish, and Métis descent from Gatineau, Ottawa, but grew up speaking both French and English fluently, as my mother is French-speaking, but my father can only understand French, not speak it. I want all of my students to feel like they are comfortable and heard when we work together to tackle something they may be having a tough time with in a traditional classroom learning environment. I specialize my teaching to each student's needs and, as someone who had to advocate for their own I.E.P. diagnosis of A.D.D. in high school, I never want my students to feel like they have to advocate for their freedom to learn how they see fit. I accommodate to them, not the other way around, and this is my main principle as an educator. I am not an educator who is seeking to strive towards big changes in my students' learning, because this is unrealistic. Education is not linear, and the small wins are just as, if not more, important because this means the learning is being steadily absorbed and create more lasting impacts on children. Connecting to one's education means they are creating personal ties between their life and learning, which means the student can carry this information beyond any exam or final assignments, and continue to build upon it. This is how I aspire to teach. Having an Undergraduate Degree with Indigenous Studies as the major and FSL as my minor, I also try to incorporate Indigenous pedagogies and ways of knowing into my teaching to allow my students to receive a more well-rounded learning experience. I am fascinated by the history of the French Language in Canada and love to help students improve their phonetics, reading, listening, and speaking, with the integration of said history. I deeply connect with the importance of Orality in Indigenous Learning and this translates through both the Indigenous Studies and French language that I teach.
