About AnneMarie

ABOUT ANNEMARIE: I have been an Art & Design educator, Graphic Designer and a Visual Communicator for over 12 years. I teach learners of all ages. My day job exists in the classroom where I teach middle and high school art and design, but I have years of experience with toddler and elementary school kiddos as well as adult workshops and one-on-one tutoring. I graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a BFA in Graphic Design, and a MAT in Visual Arts. I worked at a design studio in Old City for 4 years, and continue to do freelance Graphic Design jobs. I live outside of Philadelphia, PA, and when I am not teaching I love cooking, going to the beach, working with ceramics & collages, and hanging out with my two young kids!

TEACHING STYLE: I meet my students where they are emotionally, physically, and mentally and create a safe space of calmness. A space where they can experiment with materials and ideas. By responding to what they have designed, I give them feedback to push their designs, and guide them to the next level. The most amazing thing about teaching is seeing the joy and pride in what a student has created. TYPICAL LESSON PLAN (45 min - 1 hour) - Overview of the project (5 min) - Project demonstration, directions, examples, materials needed (10 min) - Work studio with guidance and feedback (30-40 min) - Closure and next steps (10 min)

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I have always loved art and design! I was determined to go to art school, and when I graduated from The University of the Arts I worked as a Graphic Designer at a studio in Old City, Philadelphia - Allemann, Almquist & Jones. I was given the opportunity to teach high school students on the weekends, and it was in this pre-college program that I fell in love with teaching. Intrinsically, in my heart, I discovered that I wanted to teach and connect with others. I went to graduate school and received my Masters in Teaching: Visual Arts.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

Surrealism, and the work of Salvador Dali, has always affected me on an emotional level. Surrealism focuses intently on our dreams and the subconscious which can be incredibly powerful in art. When creating, I gravitate towards mixed-media and collage because it lends itself to organic pairings of symbolism.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

As an Art and Design teacher, I believe you must possess expert knowledge in the formal aspects of design education. Such as, composition, typography, elements/principles of design, art criticism and art history. In addition, it is important to genuinely care for your students' interests and growth by infusing art lessons with empathy, awareness of the identity, and the unconscious. Art and Design teachers must be able to quickly adapt to the students' needs, by responding to what they have designed, giving feedback to push their designs, and guiding them to the next level.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Trust in the creative process - it is more important than the product! Everybody has difficulty coming up with ideas. It is normal to get distracted, frustrated and hate the design you are creating. Take a break from it and come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

The most amazing thing about teaching is seeing the joy and pride in what a student has created. Something that they didn't think they were capable of.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am particularly proud of the design work I created in college. When I look back on it, or show it as examples to my students I am retroactively impressed by the amount of detail and care I put into each project - concept, typography, images and the overall expression. Recently, I am always proud of the bespoke lessons that I create for each of my students.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I am constantly surprised by my students! One of my students, Bill, spends time outside of our lessons sketching, practicing, and experimenting. In a short few months he has progressed not only in his techniques, but also in composition. He can see his advancement, and it is so rewarding.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Genuinely get to know your students and design individual lessons for their needs. Also, be a life-long learner and continue to refine your skills and techniques. Your students will be better for it!
