About Stacey
My saxophone teaching is rooted in a belief that everyone, regardless of age or background, has the potential to become an expressive, confident musician. I help students develop technical fluency through a strong foundation of breath control, embouchure balance, articulation exercises, and scale-based agility work. But I also foster musical imagination from day one—encouraging exploration of dynamics, tempo shifts, tone variation, and phrasing to build emotional depth in their playing. Theory is taught in digestible pieces, always connected to the music the student is practicing, whether we’re analyzing a jazz standard, improvising over a minor blues, or learning how to navigate key changes in a classical étude. Improvisation is not reserved for advanced students—in fact, my goal is to demystify it and make it a regular, joyful part of lessons. I use prompts like mood-based playing (“improvise a rainy-day melody”), chord-based jamming, or motivic development to encourage spontaneous creation. I also support students in goal-setting, from preparing for school concerts and college auditions to composing original music or collaborating with other musicians. A particularly impactful moment was when a student took a melodic line we’d improvised in class and turned it into a full composition that they later recorded and shared with friends and family. Experiences like that show how music becomes personal and empowering. My ultimate goal is to guide students to a place where they not only play skillfully, but also play with intention, joy, and a clear sense of who they are as musicians.

As a saxophone educator, I view music as a journey of self-expression and discovery. My teaching philosophy centers on developing a strong technical foundation while fostering creativity and emotional depth. We begin with fundamental techniques—tone production, breath control, embouchure, articulation, and finger dexterity—ensuring that students have the tools to express themselves confidently.
From there, we delve into the art of improvisation, treating it as a language to be learned and mastered. I guide students through the process of building solos, emphasizing the importance of phrasing, rhythmic variation, and thematic development. Ear training and transcription are integral parts of our lessons, as they help students internalize musical ideas and develop a personal voice.
I also encourage students to compose their own music, fostering a deeper connection to the material and enhancing their creative abilities. Technology plays a significant role in our lessons; we utilize recording software, slow-down apps, and digital loopers to facilitate practice and analysis. One of my proudest moments as a teacher was witnessing a student, initially hesitant to improvise, perform an original composition at a local jazz festival.
This transformation was a testament to the power of personalized instruction and the importance of creating a supportive learning environment. My goal is to help each student find their unique voice on the saxophone, empowering them to communicate their emotions and stories through music.
