About Luis
I began playing chess competitively in 6th grade after which it became a great passion of mine. Chess besides the fun of the game teaches a number of practical skills which can have very positive effects on a person's life, a it has on mine. Because of this my passion for playing chess translated into my joy in teaching it to others with the hope that students can take the positivity and fun from it that I have. Throughout my competitive chess playing career I placed multiple times at the top of my divisions at both the state and national level. With my teaching career, it first began as a volunteer project in high school in which I partnered with m middle school's teacher to build up an afterschool program for students who had graduated to high school or beyond could come back and teach new students in the middle school. This project led to my nomination as a representative for my high school for the Silver Knight award with the Miami Herald. After High school I joined the Capablanca Chess Academy as one of its lead teachers which is where my formal experience as a teacher rather than a tutor began. I helped develop lesson plans and working in one on one, small group, and large class room settings. We also coordinated tournaments to measure the progress of the students periodically. Throughout both my volunteering and work experience many of my students also went on to place at state and national levels within their respective divisions.

Teaching chess requires a balance of methodology and practice. Because of this it is my general approach to teach a lesson for about half the session and then to allow the student or students to play against myself or other students for the second half. This is so that they can reinforce lessons after they have been taught while also providing them a chance to have fun with the game itself not just observing through lecture. Balancing fun and learning is essential to long term development and growth in chess. Allowing them to play also provides me with an opportunity to monitor their progress and see how they are coming along and what areas they are excelling in and which they are struggling in. This approach has worked best with elementary to middle school students which is the age level with which I have the most experience working with.
