About Alban
I am originally from France but have been in Canada for 25 years (became a Canadian citizen in the process).
I have a PhD in history from York University and have a 15-year teaching experience. My fields of predilection are French and German history, but I have a strong knowledge of global history and have taught classes on Canada, the USA, decolonization, and even Asia.
I can also teach international relations/international studies.
I am extremely patient, approachable, and meticulous.

I am a historian with 15 years of experience at the postsecondary level. I hold a PhD in modern European history but can teach global history.
In terms of methodology, I like to present students with practical, relatable scenarios and themes that will not only help them succeed in their studies, but also engage with history as a discipline that will enable them to think critically of the world they live in. Thus, in addition to using didactic, interactive methods (with the help of maps, primary sources, interviews, and other kinds of testimonies), I like to include movie excerpts and documentaries to better illustrate my lessons.
By means of an example, here is a typical lesson plan -- say for the Cold War :
1. Context / the "who? what? where? how? why? so what?" questions: the two main players (USA vs. USSR), the effects of WW2, power struggles, the atom bomb, why it matters in our day and age (war in Ukraine, China and Taiwan, etc.)
2. The main themes and concepts: ideology, great power politics, wars by proxy.
3. Excerpts from the documentary "The Fog of War," or "James Bond".
Although I am trained as a university professor, I am highly adaptable and I can tailor my lessons to the student's specific needs.
