About Matthew
Hello! I’m Matt, a dedicated tutor holding a Bachelor of Arts in English from UCLA, where I graduated Cum Laude.
My specialty lies in essay writing, reading comprehension, meticulous proofreading, and college applications. With a strong foundation in literature, grammar, and composition, I specialize in guiding students to enhance their writing and reading skills. My background in English literature equips me to assist English students at every step of their education, including at the AP and collegiate levels.
Beyond academia, my career in the film industry enriches my teaching approach with unique insights into storytelling and the creative process. This background allows me to offer students a broader perspective on narrative structure, character development, and thematic depth, enhancing their ability to express ideas effectively and engagingly.

To start every new session, I meet with my prospective students one-on-one, hear about their perceived strengths and weaknesses, and develop a course of action that fits their specific needs. My goal isn't to help you fix one essay or finish one assignment, but to give you the tools to improve all of your essays and assignments going forward. To highlight my method, I have created a lesson plan for an AP Literature and Composition student practicing for the AP exam. The below lesson would be for the third session out of five total. This lesson plan could apply to other high-school and AP English courses as well as to essay assignments at the undergraduate level!
Session 3: Model Essay Analysis:
After breaking down the student’s writing strengths and weaknesses and completing a sample AP essay in the previous two sessions, I will provide the student two AP model essays, one scored at a 1 and one scored at a 5. We will analyze both essays, focusing on content, organization, and adherence to the prompt.
When I reveal the scores, we will discuss strategies used in the highly-scored essay that could be applied to the student’s future essays. Instead of giving direct corrections, I will encourage the student to identify areas for improvement themselves. This will prepare the student for the next session, which will focus on peer-review and revision.

Matthew is truly a one of a kind tutor. He recently tutored my daughter in English/essay writing and did a phenomenal job. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable in the subject, but he is also very kind, patient, and truly cares about the success of his students. My daughter always left sessions feeling supported and confident in her concept of the week.
Matt loves to learn. He appreciated the process and is methodical in his approach. He loves to write and read. He’s always had an interest in passing this love along. He has been a tutor and a swim coach and working with young people has been something he thrives at.
Matthew is incredibly knowledgeable, but even more importantly, he is great at breaking concepts down and helping others to understand. He cares about his students and their success. He is also very patient and has great suggestions.
