About LÉRAL

UBC graduate. Vocal Coach. Aspiring Talent Manager. 16+ years of experience in performance. 6+ years in coaching.

Artists that inspire me include Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, Tierra Whack, Billie Eilish, and Frank Ocean.

I've been teaching vocal lessons for 5 and a half years now. I call it Léral Studio. I have been training my voice professionally since I was 8 years old in 2008. Since then, I have worked with 5 different vocal coaches to learn healthy singing techniques and to gain performance experience. My most memorable coach has been June Kraus. She is the reason I now teach. Some of my biggest accomplishments include:

- Winning the 12-18 age category and the pop genre category in a national South African singing competition, called Eisteddfod (2012).
- Leading my church choir in worship songs (2013-2015).
- Playing the lead role (Aida) in Aida The Musical (2017).
- Winning 1st place at a Vodacom-sponsored talent show in Johannesburg (2018).
- Releasing my debut single, titled "Oops" by Léral, on all platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, etc.) - have a listen!! (2019)
- Creating a band (THE SPACE) and playing festivals, live shows, house parties, and birthday parties together (2022).
- Being named the director of Community and Membership Services (CAMS) of Blank Vinyl Project at UBC (2023).
- Winning the Vancouver Music Arts Entrepreneurship Award (2023).
- Singing backing vocals for various artists.
- Singing with Chris Martin of Coldplay and UGC at the Invictus Games (2025).

I cannot wait to learn and grow, while inspiring others to do the same! I am so EXCITED!!!!!

About the lesson

I structure my lessons in 2 parts:

1. Warm Up (where I teach technical, healthy singing skills, such as correct breathing, articulation, and vocal dynamics. I create a personalized warm-up playlist with proven exercises for students to practice and improve inside and outside of our lesson).

2. Song Work (where we apply the technical skills that were introduced in warm-up through a song of the student's choosing and my approval until it is at a place that is performable. I would define "performable" as the ability to convey an emotion to your audience). Note: we can sing a song in any language of your choosing.

While this structure exists, my teaching methods vary depending on the level of each student. I believe that all levels of talent should be nurtured.

To take my lessons to the next level, every last Sunday of the month, I host a free, in-person showcase so my students can interact and share what they have been working on. Family and friends are invited to support!

My ultimate goal is vocal health and growth. As long as my students grow and have fun doing it, I am doing my job. I am excited to learn and discover new talent.

When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
My mom says I was singing before I could talk, and I believe her. Ever since I can remember I have been making melodic sounds with my mouth, but it truly began for me in 2010 when I started vocal training with June Kraus at the June Kraus Vocal Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa. June nurtured my voice and threw me on stage, where I fell in love with performing and the art of being watched and listened to. I think I owe that to June!
What makes you passionate about your subject?
I don't know what makes me passionate about vocals and performance, but I discovered I was passionate when I was gifted my first pair of beats headphones. They were Justbeats - Justin Bieber's collab with the brand - and I thought they were perfect and I loved them. I would listen to music on these phenomenal (at the time) headphones and I would try to dissect each layer of voice, each harmony and chorus line, trying to unlock what vowel sound the singer used here, or what register they were in there. I was undoubtedly entranced and passionate.
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
It was like love at first sight when I discovered teaching vocal lessons myself. As much as I am a teacher, I learn so much from my students. When I first started this thing 3 years ago, I could not vocalize like I can today. Students ask questions that better my own understanding of the sport. Three years ago I also didn't have the taste palette for music that I do now. My students continue to shape and change me in the best ways imaginable. So then, my favourite thing about teaching is that I learn so much from those that I teach.
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
I am inspired by my surroundings - anything an everything I encounter is a form of artistic inspiration to me. To be more specific, I am deeply inspired by my vocal coaches - June Kraus, Valeska Muller, Mallie Kelly, and Magda Gunter. These ladies have all shown me pieces of myself and of them that can't be quantified. They all helped me discover my singing voice and nurtured my confidence so that I believed I could share it loudly. Other than vocal coaches, I am musically inspired by Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, and Tierra Whack! Beyond music, I also love my mom and am inspired by how much she loves me.
What are your keys to success?
My keys to success shall be revealed in session, but I will share this one. When it comes to creating, I rarely say "no".
