The most essential task for any of my students is ear training. Here's a glimpse into the various techniques and exercises we use to sharpen our musical ears and enhance overall musicianship:

Pitch Recognition
Identify and reproduce notes and intervals with precision. You'll develop the ability to accurately discern pitches, laying the foundation for advanced musical skills.

Chord Identification
Learn to distinguish between major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords, as well as more complex harmonies. This skill is crucial for both playing and understanding music at a deeper level.

Rhythm Mastery
Develop a keen sense of timing and rhythm through clapping, tapping, and vocal exercises. These activities will help you internalize rhythm and improve your overall musicality.

Melodic Dictation
Practice transcribing melodies by ear, enhancing your ability to understand and reproduce musical lines. This exercise boosts your listening skills and aids in learning new pieces more quickly.

Harmonic Analysis
Gain insights into chord progressions and harmonic structures, allowing you to appreciate and create music on a deeper level. Understanding harmony is key to both composition and interpretation.

Internal Metronome and Rhythm Development
I guide students in developing their internal metronome, rhythm, and feel. While a metronome can be a helpful tool, I emphasize counting out loud during practice to build a strong internal sense of timing and avoid reliance on external devices.

I have devoted my entire life to pursuing music and am passionate about sharing the knowledge I have gained over the years with you! In our first lesson, we can discuss your specific goals, but here I shall highlight a broad overview of my teaching approach.

Notation
Learning to read classical music notation is critical for pianists. Playing notes from a stave should become as natural as reading words on a page. This fluency is achieved through regular sight-reading exercises that I demonstrate, building on a foundation of good ear training and sturdy internal rhythm.

Technique
I help students develop the mechanics of their technique to achieve complete control over their fingers and confidence in the physical landscape of the piano. This includes finger independence, dexterity, and control over the quality and depth of each note. Mastery of technique allows for expressive storytelling through music. At its core, technique involves the ability to control weight distribution, and musicality is a technique in its own right.

Additional Aspects
My teaching also covers memorization, repertoire, improvisation, analytical theory, motivation, and mindset. For students interested in grade examinations (ABRSM or Trinity), I am happy to help set and achieve those goals.
