About Victoria
Teaching saxophone is a deeply rewarding journey where I help students build a solid technical foundation while discovering their unique musical voice. From the very beginning, I emphasize essential skills such as breath control, embouchure development, finger dexterity, proper posture, articulation, and tone production, as these are critical for producing a rich and controlled sound. Intonation and rhythmic precision are constant focus areas to develop confident, polished playing. Improvisation plays a central role in my teaching; I introduce students to scales, modes, and chord changes early on and encourage creative exploration through call-and-response exercises, backing tracks, and analysis of great solos. Theory lessons are integrated naturally and always tied to the music being studied, helping students see the practical value of understanding harmony and structure. Repertoire is chosen based on the student’s interests, spanning jazz, blues, pop, and classical genres, ensuring lessons are meaningful and engaging. I work with students to set realistic, motivating goals and develop practice strategies that fit their schedules, helping them maintain steady progress. Technology, including recording tools, tuners, and play-along tracks, is an important part of my teaching toolkit, supporting self-assessment and encouraging critical listening. One of the most memorable moments in my teaching career was witnessing a shy student evolve into a confident improviser who performed with passion at a school recital. My ultimate aim is to guide saxophonists to become versatile, expressive musicians who enjoy their journey and feel empowered by their progress.

In my saxophone teaching, I emphasize the joy of music as much as the discipline required to play well. I guide students through essential technical skills such as breath control, embouchure shaping, clear articulation, finger coordination, and tone development to ensure a strong, healthy foundation.
Alongside technical exercises, I introduce theory, sight-reading, and ear training early to prepare students for improvisation and ensemble playing. Each lesson is tailored to students’ unique tastes, from traditional jazz standards and blues to contemporary pop and funk styles, making learning relevant and engaging.
Improvisation is central to my approach; I break down the creative process into digestible parts including scale work, melodic development, rhythmic variation, and phrasing, encouraging students to explore and develop their own musical voice. I integrate technology such as recording software, slow-downer apps, and backing tracks to enrich practice and provide feedback.
Performance coaching helps students build confidence and stage presence, with strategies for managing nerves and connecting emotionally with audiences. I foster a warm, supportive atmosphere that encourages curiosity and resilience. One of my proudest moments was helping a shy student blossom into a confident soloist performing at community jazz nights. My aim is to empower students to become technically proficient, expressive saxophonists who find joy and freedom through music.
