I revolve my English teaching around practicality, media, customization, and excitement. I myself have learned foreign languages in an immersive environment, and found that immersive learning using the media you are interested in is the best way to stay committed to learning a language at a sustainable pace. Please see below for the three types of students I can cater to and how my approach differs for each: ESL Students at a beginner to Intermediate level - First Step: Assess your level of English, assess your confidence, and identify two target areas: a need and a want derived from media (Example 1: I need to understand how to use conjugations AND I want to be able to rap along to my favorite song.) - Second Step: Identify how we can incorporate your two goals together. When taking this approach, we can also improve other parts of your English, like vocabulary, accent, and other grammar structures. For example 1: I would find a few songs you would like that have a variety of conjugations and form each lesson plan around a part of the song. Each lesson would either revolve around identifying verbs, grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and nouns. We will customize your lesson plan around your level, and your speed of learning. - Third Step: Identify what we have learned and what other parts of English we feel we need to improve upon. ESL Students above an Intermediate level of English - First Step: Assess your level of English, assess your confidence, and identify two target areas: a need and a want derived from media (Example: I need to improve my audio comprehension, AND I want to watch my favorite TV series without relying on subtitles.) - Second Step: Identify how we can incorporate your two goals together. When taking this approach, we can also improve other parts of your English, like vocabulary, accent, and other grammar structures. For example: We choose a movie you like, and we watch the scene raw, with no subtitles, to see what you understand. Then we break down what you don't understand and why. Each lesson would revolve around several components including (but not limited to) identifying verbs, grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and nouns. We will customize your lesson plan around your level, and your speed of learning. For example, some learners may be able to go through two scenes a lesson, focusing only on new verbs, or slang, and other way requires multiple lessons per scene to ensure complete comprehension of the scene. - Third Step: Reach that goal, and assess what parts of that goal could be improved upon. Example: You are now able to watch a movie without subtitles, but now you want to target reading comprehension. ESL or Native English Speakers looking to advance particular writing, speaking, or reading skill (Business Writing, essays, speeches, creative writing, or poetry) -First Step: Identify whether you have a specific item you need to improve or if you generally want to improve upon a topic. Example A: You want to write a college admissions essay. Example B: You want to improve upon essay writing. -Second Step: You take the first stab at writing it. For Example A: We take a pre-given prompt and you take your first stab at writing it with no guidance from me. For Example B: I give you an example of an essay prompt that is practical, and you take your first stab at writing it with no guidance from me. -Third Step: For both example A & B: I critique your attempt and we live review the edits. I will explain each and every detail of my edit with you. We then choose one target area that needs to be improved upon and I give you a related prompt. For example: You need to improve upon having a strong voice. So I will then give you a more personal prompt to do that may have nothing to do with the type of writing we are improving. The prompt may be: Write about your favorite book protagonist from the perspective of your favorite antagonist. Fourth Step: We then live review my edits, and then repeat step 2 at taking another stab at your original goal. We then repeat step 3 again and then step 2 as many times as needed depending on your timeline. Fifth step: We polish up your final draft of your original goal. If you are Example B, we will have multiple examples of the topic you are trying to improve upon.
