About Shannon
After completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and my Communicative Disorders Graduate Certificate at Durham College in Oshawa, I moved to Edmonton to become a speech therapy assistant. For three years I carried out speech and language therapy for Edmonton Catholic Schools. I created phonological awareness materials, sequencing materials, AAC resources and early learning materials for students between pre-school to grade six.
During my time in an elementary school setting, I noticed a lack in appropriate resources for students in inclusive education. I found that the curriculum did not build confidence or independence in their schoolwork. Work was either being done for them or had little effect on their learning outcomes. I have since learned that resources for inclusive students need to be flexible and adapted for students. More importantly, they need to be resources that families can use with their kids easily and correctly. I plan to use many of the same strategies that I learned as a speech therapy assistant in tutoring.

When I work with special education students, I always focus on a single goal and then provide a specific level of assistance. My very first question to any family or teacher is "What do you want the child to focus on?" This could be spelling, reading, comprehension, expressive language etc. Afterwards I adapt any given assignment and create a resource where I can provide the appropriate amount of assistance. I will always provide full assistance first and then gauge where we can move on from there.
Since I love working with younger children, I always make sure to motivate them by using characters and situations they find appealing. My favorite way to reward them for their hard work is with a funny GIF.
