About Finbar
I'm a software engineering student at Macquarie University with a genuine passion for clean code and functional design. Programming isn't just what I study, it's what I do for fun, for work, and as a way to solve real problems creatively. Currently, I'm the technical co-founder of Modospace, an award-winning startup where I lead the development of our web platform from architecture to deployment. This role has taught me not just how to write code, but how to communicate technical concepts clearly, work collaboratively, and break down complex problems into manageable steps - all skills that translate directly into effective teaching. Before university, I built my programming foundation independently through personal projects and freelance web development work. I've designed and deployed professional websites for real clients, integrated payment systems and booking APIs, and explored everything from 3D graphics to AI-powered applications. This hands-on experience means I can show you how programming concepts actually work in practice, not just in theory. What drives me as a tutor is seeing that moment when something clicks for a student. I remember how overwhelming programming felt when I first started, which is why I'm patient, approachable, and committed to creating a judgment-free learning environment. I explain things in plain English, use relatable examples, and always make sure you understand the "why" behind the code, not just the "how." Outside of programming, I stay active through cycling, gym sessions, and getting out on the water - activities that keep me balanced and energized. I bring that same positive energy into my teaching, making lessons engaging and productive without feeling like a chore. Whether you're taking your first steps in coding or looking to strengthen your fundamentals, I'm here to help you build real skills and genuine confidence as a programmer.

My Teaching Approach
I believe programming clicks best when you're actually building things. My lessons focus on learning by doing - we'll work through real projects that reinforce core concepts while giving you something tangible to show for your effort.
Each session typically runs 60-90 minutes, which gives us enough time to introduce new concepts, work through challenges together, and leave you with clear next steps to practice between lessons. I tailor the pace to match your learning style - whether you need more time on fundamentals or you're ready to dive into more complex topics.
My Background
I'm currently studying Software Engineering at Macquarie University and work as the technical co-founder of Modospace, an award-winning startup where I design and build web applications from the ground up. I've developed multiple client websites, integrated APIs for real-world applications, and regularly explore new programming concepts through personal projects ranging from 3D web experiences to AI-powered tools.
Who I Teach
My lessons are ideal for:
- Complete beginners wanting to start their programming journey
- High school students exploring coding or preparing for IT subjects
- University students needing support with web development or programming fundamentals
- Career changers looking to build a foundation in software development
I specialize in JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Git version control, web development workflows, and programming fundamentals. I'm also comfortable teaching Python, Java, and introducing concepts like APIs, databases, and modern deployment practices.
What Makes My Approach Different
I keep things relaxed and judgment-free. Everyone learns at their own pace, and there's no such thing as a "stupid question" in my sessions. I explain concepts clearly, use plenty of analogies, and always relate technical ideas back to practical applications. You'll leave each lesson with working code, a clearer understanding, and the confidence to keep building on your own.
