About Shahnawaz

I am a Barrister (NR) and a Solicitor, having passed the UK Bar examinations and SQEs and simultaneously completing two LL.Ms. Since then, I have taught law at all levels, including GCSE, A level, LL.B, LL.M, LPC, SQE and Bar Training/Vocational courses. I have tutored students on a wide range of legal topics, from basic legal concepts of contract and criminal law to complex procedural rules of civil and criminal litigation. I am also a practising lawyer in the corporate/commercial sector of the High Courts of Pakistan. This gives my students the benefit of my practical insight into legal theories and complexities. I use my experience to create a fun and engaging learning environment that helps students grasp complex legal issues, whether procedural or substantive. I also draw on my experience of being taught and trained in the UK to help students understand the perspective and requirements of the examiner. This allows them to prioritise their goals and target particular grades. My passion and experience as a legal career and education consultant/counsellor help my students make the most of their studies. I work with them to identify their career goals and develop a plan to achieve them. I also provide them with real-life insights into the requirements of employers, so that they can tailor their studies accordingly.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in law during my undergraduate studies when I took my first legal studies course. The complexity of legal systems, the intricacies of case law, and the way in which laws shape societies fascinated me. As for private tutoring, I became interested in it during law school when I noticed the significant impact personalized instruction could have on understanding complex legal concepts.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As a law tutor, I specialize in various legal subjects, including but not limited to criminal law, contract law, tort law, equity & trusts, property law, European Union law and more. I also specialise in Civil Litigation, Professional Ethics and tutoring skills-based modules like drafting, opinion writing and advocacies. I enjoy discussing case studies, analyzing legal principles, and helping students develop critical thinking skills necessary for legal analysis. However, I find that some students struggle with understanding legal terminology or applying legal principles to hypothetical scenarios, which can be challenging to address but are essential for success in the field.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have had several role models in the legal field who inspired me. One particular professor stands out for her passion for teaching and her ability to make complex legal concepts accessible to her students. Her dedication to fostering a deep understanding of the law and her commitment to mentorship have greatly influenced my own approach to tutoring.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Qualities required to be a good law tutor include a strong grasp of legal principles, excellent communication skills, patience, adaptability, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed in their legal studies. It's crucial to be able to break down complex legal concepts into digestible pieces, tailor instruction to meet each student's needs, and create a supportive learning environment.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One valuable anecdote from my tutoring experience involves a student who was struggling to understand the concept of negligence in tort law. Through patient explanation, real-world examples, and practice problems, we were able to clarify the elements of negligence and apply them to various scenarios. Witnessing the student's "aha" moment and seeing their confidence grow as they mastered the concept was incredibly rewarding.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Some challenges I have faced in tutoring law include addressing the varying levels of prior legal knowledge among students, finding effective ways to engage students in legal analysis, and staying updated on changes in legal doctrines and precedents. Additionally, helping students develop strong legal writing skills and prepare for exams can be ongoing challenges.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My particular passion lies in both teaching and the law. I am deeply committed to helping students navigate the complexities of legal studies, develop critical thinking skills, and achieve their academic and professional goals. Teaching law allows me to share my enthusiasm for the subject while empowering students to become knowledgeable and effective legal professionals.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof as a law tutor is my dedication to providing high-quality instruction, my ability to simplify complex legal concepts, and my commitment to helping students succeed. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, engaging in discussions, and actively participating in their own learning process. Additionally, my practical experience in the legal field enhances my ability to provide real-world insights and guidance to my students.
