Lessons are personalized to the student.
For kids I use the Alfred Basic Piano series along with simple notation version of songs they like from radio, tv, and video games.
For teens and adults I use a combination of my own book I’ve written (Piano Crash Course for the Modern Musician) along with more advanced notations of the music they enjoy.
If anyone has any specific goals in mind (I.e. planning on auditioning for college, want to be in a band, want to write music), I’m more than happy to make that a focus in your studies.

I have been having a 30-45 min guitar lesson from Ian since... ~2018. At first in person, but virtually since Mar2020. He is great for me as an adult student. He challenges me and I end up playing beyond my expectations. We work on all aspects of guitar via online lesson. He is able to assess my playing quite well through the screen. I also did a little piano study with him (to break things up for me). He will roll with it. He is fastidious about asking how I feel about the lesson/the work. He encourages candor. He has a brain steeped in music and rhythms. He is a kind person as well which makes for a good teacher.
I've been taking remote guitar lessons from Ian for a little over three months and have been really happy with my progress and the quality of the lessons. I had demo lessons from 5 different teachers and his approach stood out to me, both in terms of the quality of content and also his easygoing attitude. He leverages video streams and multiple cameras to great effect to make the lessons go smoothly and use his tablet as a virtual whiteboard. One thing in particular that I appreciate is that despite my initial trepidation with approaching music theory, he has found ways to sneak it into each lesson without being too overwhelming, and his attitude is always super positive which makes the experience a lot of fun. His homework and practice schedule is pretty accommodating but I've definitely noticed an improvement in my playing and music understanding in just a few months.
Our 15 year old son has been going to Ian for piano since he was 8. Ian is an incredibly talented musician and teacher. He has helped our son learn the piano to perform a large number of songs but he has helped our son learn and fully understand the bigger picture of writing music. Ian is patient and enjoys seeing the growth in our son’s talent. We would highly recommend Ian to anyone looking to start piano.
I work in music and come from a family of music educators. Ian is among the best of the best - a well rounded, very skilled musician, and also a master instructor who effortlessly connects with kids. I'm happy to entrust him with our son's music lessons. Most importantly, our son loves his time with Ian and looks forward to each lesson. I give Ian my strongest possible endorsement.
We found Ian through a neighbor who was taking piano lessons. He has been great with multiple ages - my youngest was 4 when he took lesson! My older two have been working with Ian for 3 school years and are now 8 and 10.
Ian does a great job meeting folks where they are starting and mixing in basic principles of music and the instrument as well as giving flexibility for personal preferences. The boys have played everything from Alfred's books to Cats to We don't talk about Bruno to Still Alive (from Portal, video game).
Ian has a wonderful variety of musical styles as well as instruments he teaches. My oldest started on piano and now studies guitar and loves it! I grew up playing multiple instruments in traditional/classical styles and wanted to explore more improvisational styles so I took some lessons with Ian, as well. He is fun to work with and able to communicate so much!I took guitar lessons from Ian for almost five years and loved it! He also taught me theory, ear training, and piano. He has helped me record and mix songs as well. Ian is super friendly and very skilled at what he does. Definitely recommend him as an instructor!
I have learned so much from Ian. I have been his student for two years. He makes learning a musical instrument fun. He is incredibly knowledgeable as well as talented. As an older adult learner I appreciate his patience, enthusiasm and sense of humor. I highly recommend Ian!
My 13 yo son has been taking piano lessons with Ian for the last 3 years. We chose Ian initially because he offered a formal lesson that allowed my son to learn on music that he liked. This kept his interest and also helped him to improve his skills. Ian is very talented and we highly recommend him!
I have had Ian as an instructor for my five children for over 5 years. He is very flexible and adapts to every age. He is very talented and can play many pieces by ear while also tailoring his lessons to any learning style you prefer. We have had him do lessons for guitar, drums, and now piano.
