About Batsheva

I have been singing for more than thirty years in a lot of different musical genres. In the past fifteen years, I have been specializing in Traditional and Medieval singing. A fluent French, English and Irish speaker with a good command of Italian, I have been teaching singing and foreign languages for many years. I particularly like teaching singing in foreign languages, and particularly teaching French-language songs to English speakers and English-language songs to French speakers.

Background:

In the interest of keeping this profile readable, this is a ‘nutshell version’ of the French-language CV available on my French-language profile, but please don’t hesitate to ask me for a full English-language version of my CV for more information.

Training:

World Music and Traditional singing:

1997-1999: World Music training with singer and ethnomusicologist Martina Catella in Paris, France.

2005-2008: Irish traditional, ‘Sean-Nós’ singing lessons with singer Gearóidín Bhreathnach in Donegal, Republic of Ireland.

2008-2009: MA in Irish Traditional Music at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Traditional singing. Elective: Gregorian Chant. First Class Honours.

2009-2010: Dioplóma sna Dána i gCóiriú agus Stáitsiú an Cheoil Thraidisiúnta (Diploma in the Arrangement and Staging of Traditional Music), Ácadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, National University of Ireland, Galway. Diploma taught through Irish in Spiddal, County Galway, Ireland. First Class Honours.

Medieval Music:

2006-2008: Medieval singing at the Centre de Musique Médiévale de Paris (the ‘Centre for Medieval Music in Paris’), with teachers from Ensembles Alla Francesca and Discantus.

I also studied Opera singing for three years in France with singers Ilona Baldo and Ana Raquel Satre.

Professional background.

Between 2007 and 2013, I performed extensively in Ireland, France as well as in the US with various ensembles. In particular, I was a member of Tír na mBeo Duet (Celtic and Medieval Music), Cantoral (Gregorian Chant) and Inis (Celtic and French traditional Music). In November 2010, I was invited to give a concert with professional Medieval music Ensemble Amadis, near Aix-en-Provence, France.

Teaching:

I have been teaching singing since 2007, in many different contexts and for students of all ages. In particular, I have taught:

On an Irish traditional singing and vocal technique summer course in Donegal, Republic of Ireland.

Medieval and Christmas song workshops at a school in Paris, France.

I also spent two years teaching Irish traditional singing and Gregorian Chant at Galway music school Maoin Cheoil na Gaillimhe, between 2010 and 2012 and I also spent six years teaching Gregorian Chant, French traditional singing, Irish traditional singing and French as a foreign language to children and adults in Connemara and Galway, County Galway, Ireland.

I speak French, English and Irish fluently and have a very good command of Italian. I have been working as an online French as a Foreign Language Teacher since 2018, and have extensive experience teaching French traditional songs to French learners / non-French speakers.

Each traditional song tells us so much about life: whether those songs talk about love or celebrations, death or war, joy or sadness, what did the anonymous characters of these songs think of the world around them?

In these French and / or Irish traditional singing lessons, we will learn how to ‘sing like storytellers’: we will learn how to sing in such a way that our singing voice closely resembles our speech, so as to emphasize the words and stories told in this music. The vocal technique used to develop such a voice comes from Irish traditional singing in Irish Gaelic (‘the Irish language’), as well as from Classical Singing. Thanks to this vocal technique, not all students develop the same, standardized voice, but rather, students are allowed to each develop a singing voice that closely resembles their own spoken voice. This technique is also particularly healthy for the body and voice.

Therefore, in order to find your own ‘spoken singing voice’, we will practise certain types of breathing and singing exercises and we will work on the pronunciation of the lyrics of these songs. A French as a foreign language teacher who has been living in Ireland for the past thirteen years, I also have a lot of experience teaching French-language songs to non-French native speakers: learning how to sing in French can also help your French language learning.

I am currently offering two courses on two themes:

French traditional singing, ‘Chantons le temps’ / ‘Let’s sing about time’:

On this course, we will learn how to sing about different times of the year: songs relating to the seasons and to festivals or songs associated with farming (songs relating to ploughing, harvesting etc.). These songs will allow us to sing the stories the French would have told at different times of the year, and even though some of these songs are longer and more challenging, others were specifically selected to suit students who are new to singing in French.

Irish traditional singing, ‘Pub and drinking songs’: on this course, you will learn songs about drinking as well as songs that are usually sung down the pub in Ireland: light and funny songs, love ballads, war songs, songs of nostalgia and longing…Thanks to this course, you will learn new songs or maybe go over old favourites… and of course, what better way to ‘travel’ to Ireland from the comfort of your own home? So join us for some Irish ‘musical fun’!

Practical details:

When can we have our class? I teach Thursdays to Sundays from 3 to 9 PM French time, and Mondays from 3 to 7 PM French time. I don’t teach on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Thank you for suggesting a class time at times and on days when I do teach. Thank you for booking at least 72 hours (three days) before the date and time of the class you’d like to book. Please also note that, since I sometimes have another job at those exact same times, it is best to book your class with me in advance. This will ensure you secure the day and time you’d like.

Payments: The 1st class is a free trial lesson.

Who are those lessons for: Lessons open to teenagers and adults over 15 years old, of all singing levels.

Under 18s, please note: for Irish traditional singing in English, ‘Pub and drinking songs’, due to the fact drinking songs can have a rather mature theme, a parent / legal guardian must contact me first so we discuss the songs I could teach the student.

In what language(s) are the classes taught? Classes taught through French or English. Tá Gaeilge líofa freisin agam, agus mé sásta mo chuid ranganna a theagasc trí mheán na Gaeilge. Go raibh maith agat! (I also speak fluent Irish, and I am more than willing to teach my classes through Irish. Thank you!)

How are the classes taught: I only teach online / via webcam.

Rescheduling / cancellations: If you need to cancel or reschedule a class, you agree to do so via Superprof at least 24 hours before class time. For lessons not cancelled or rescheduled at least 24 hours in advance, the full class fee is due.
