About Laura

Hola! Soy Laura I was born in Venezuela and raised in the UK. Growing up in a bilingual household not only allowed me to reach native-level proficiency in both Spanish and English but also ignited my passion for linguistics and Hispanic politics, which I went on to study at Newcastle University during my BA. My journey took me to South America during 2018-2019 as part of my intercalating year. There, I had the incredible opportunity to teach English at a university in the North of Chile, thanks to the British Council. This experience not only deepened my understanding of language pedagogy but also strengthened my commitment to a career in education. In 2021, I embarked on my Master's journey at UCL in Globalisation and Latin American Development. The course delved into the areas of Human Rights, Economics, and Sustainable Development in Latin America. I have since incorporated aspects of what I learnt during my time studying into my advanced course, offering you a holistic perspective of the region. My Specialisations: I specialise in a number of curriculums, from AQA (GCSE & A-Level) Spanish Course, typically taught across the UK to the EDEXCEL (IGCSE & A-Level) and Cambridge Pre-U programmes which I have taught to international students across the UAE and Asia. Whether you're aiming for academic excellence or simply eager to embrace the beauty of the Spanish language, I'm here to guide you every step of the way. Diverse Student Community: Over the past four years, I've had the pleasure of working with an incredible array of students from across the globe, including Dubai, South Korea, the US, Australia, and, of course, the UK. The age range of my students has been as diverse as their backgrounds, spanning from 6 years old to 70. This diversity is what fuels my passion for tutoring – the constant exchange of knowledge and culture. Let's Learn Together: Teaching is not just my profession; it is what I am most enthusiastic about. I firmly believe that learning should be an engaging and transformative experience. I've learned as much from my students as they have from me, and I look forward to potentially working with you towards your objectives. So, whether you're taking your first steps into the world of Spanish or seeking to improve your existing skills, I'm here to make this journey enjoyable, informative, and tailored to your unique goals.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Spanish and English thanks to my parents. My British father went to work in Venezuela in the 90s as a cowboy (not sure what spurred this rogue decision) and he met my Venezuelan mother on the ranch. They lived out there for 11 years (&had me) and We've spoken a lovely mix of Spanglish at home ever since.
I chose to study politics and Spanish at university in order to gain insight into Venezuela's political landscape and to perfect my Spanish grammar. Four years on and I have graduate with a distinction in oral Spanish and having worked for a year teaching English in a Chilean university.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Pedro Almodovar is the figure that I would choose as the emblematic representative of Spanish culture. He has produced great films such as 'Volver' which encapsulates much of Hispanic culture. If any of my students are cinephiles, I have a great list of film which I can recommend to stretch their learning that little bit further.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

'Sana sana colita de rana ,Si no sanas hoy, Sanarás mañana'
This is the phrase that many Hispanic parents will sing to their kids if they've had a bit of a bump or a fall. In English it doesn't translate quite so cutely... ' Heal, Heal, Lizard's butt, if it doesn't heal today, it'll heal tomorrow'
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Spanish is about so much more than just being able to order your food when you're abroad. It's about understanding a different culture and world perception. I like to talk with my students about the complexity of directly translation and explain some of the meaning that can be lost in translation.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Spanish, luckily is one of the easier languages to learn, with a near identical alphabet and relatively easy phonetics. The only thing I think can take a while to get used to, particularly for beginners, are those pesky irregular verb conjugations, but with regular practice and examples you'll be an expert in no time.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

While this doesn't relate to my language learning, it does relate to tutoring.
At GCSE Level, I really struggled with Math. (I'm talking didn't understand 75% of the exam struggled). With 6 months of private tuition, I went from a predicted E to achieving an A in my summer exams. Not only that but I actually began to enjoy Maths! 1-1 tuition is unparalleled in its ability to supercharge learning and confidence.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Although my Spanish was already fluent before I left for my year abroad, it was entirely composed of Venezuelan and Spanish colloquialisms. After travelling through Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Paraguay, I learnt so much more both in terms of the continents culture and language differences.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

In my opinion a good learning environment is one that is interesting, creative and friendly. I hope to provide all my students with tailored classes that build their confidence while also capturing their interests. Everyone is different, and so it's no surprise that we all learn differently. I look forward to potentially helping you to fulfil your goal of learning Spanish, your way!
