About Mariana

Over 25 years! That's how long I've been playing around with art!
I'm 35 years old and I consider myself to be pretty easygoing, cheerful and nice to everyone. I like my classes to be really chill and casual, though if you're feeling adventurous I can give you a hell of a challenge if that's what you're looking for! I'm also extremely honest and I will gladly let you know my opinion on things.

I have an 8-year-old art supervisor - Kiwi, my dog, who never leaves my side - and he might even make an appearance on camera here and there to check out your work. He's really picky though, so you might wanna put up your best effort to please him!

The only thing that I ask is that, while chatting during class, let's please leave out politics and religion. I've got nothing against those topics, I just think that they stir trouble more often than not and I'd rather stay away from that possibility. I just want a nice environment where we can get along!

As for the career technicalities: I got my diploma in Visual Arts in 2012, then immediately moved to the US in order to pursue my animation career. I spent 3 years there studying art and animation - Entertainment Design and Digital Production - in one of the best art/3D schools in the world, called Gnomon. I got my certificate in 2016, and I've worked as freelance illustrator for years. In 2018 I got hired by Treyarch to work as a character animator for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and, today, I work in the film, game and animation industry.
Even though nowadays I prefer having illustration and drawing as a hobby, nothing stops me from teaching it to other people. There's honestly nothing more satisfying than seeing someone improve with my help. I hope to see you around!

I've taught all ages and levels before, from people who wanted to draw or paint casually to others who wanted to apply for an art school. Currently I'm sticking to mostly teenagers and adults.

I'll be teaching you the subjects I can see you have most difficulty with - be it figure drawing, perspective, concept art or even going back to fundamentals as a reminder. I do both traditional and digital art, so I can also teach you how to move from one media to another without fear!

I like to schedule the first lesson as a free lesson to help me know you better, talk more about your goals and see some of your work (if any). It's mostly a casual chat to get to know you better and introduce myself and it rarely lasts a full hour. This helps me not only when preparing personalized art lessons for you, whatever your focus may be, but also when figuring out what works best for you in terms of learning, such as:

- Do you have time for homework?
- Do you prefer a more objective explanation as opposed to a more detailed one?
- Do you prefer learning all the theory first and then practicing later all at once, or to take it in small chunks?
- How experienced are you in art?
- Do you prefer a more casual class or one that challenges you every time?

Just a tiny PSA - if you're starting out from the very beginning with the fundamentals, please bear with me for a couple of classes because it will probably be super boring at first! I'll try to make it as entertaining as possible, but I'm (painfully) aware of how dull the more technical subjects can be. I PROMISE it will get better. Pinky promise.

Also: no-shows or cancellations without previous notice will be considered taught classes and charged in full, as I allocate my time and availability according to the schedule.

I should also mention that I have severe ADHD and I deal with it literally on a daily basis. However, even though it does have its shortcomings, I don't consider it a fully bad thing! Not only does that mean that I work harder than a lot of people out there, but also that I know how to deal with people who are in the same position as I am. I might even be able to teach tricks on how to take advantage of it! So if you're in the same boat, hop in and let's figure out together how to steer this business!

I'm a very open person, so if anything happens, you can always send me a message explaining your situation and I'll do my very best to accommodate you. I do, however, have a couple of ground rules for our classes, which is based off of mutual respect.

15 minute grace period:
I will wait for you for 15 minutes after our agreed schedule. After that, unless you've let me know beforehand that you will be late, our lesson will be considered a no show and no refunds will be issued.

Lesson requests:
Please do make sure to accept our lessons and/or send me some sort of confirmation at least a couple of hours beforehand, otherwise I'll assume that we won't have class that day.

24h cancellation policy:
Please let me know ahead of time if you will not be able to make it for a lesson, preferably 24h beforehand. I am aware that life happens, and circumstances change, but a respectful relationship is based on communication.

Class supplies:
Not included in the lesson rate. However, I usually ask for very affordable (yet very good!) basic supplies that can be acquired very easily, and if you have some at home we can make use of those as well.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

Since I've been a little kid. One day I picked up the pencil and I never let go since. My mom tells me that I've done 2 "genius" projects when I was little; one was a paper sculpture of a garden when I was 5, and the other was a simple traditional animation of the Swan Princess' transformation back and forth when I was 8. I've even tried getting away from it professionally and got first accepted into a Computer Engineering major when I went to college, but after a year I knew it wasn't for me and that I had to do something art related. After that, it all snowballed and I can't see myself doing anything else.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

I have lots of artists who I admire a lot, and I couldn't possibly put them all into one place - but I can tell you some of the artists I can think of off the top of my head right now! Some of them are Alphonse Mucha, heikala, Yuumei, Jaw Cooper, Jean Giraud (aka Moebius), Posuka Demizu, Sybilline, Levitzo, Weiliwonka, George Bridgman, James Gurney... And much, much more.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

    Discipline. That beats anything else.
Honestly though that's kind of the pot calling the kettle black hahaha. I struggle with severe ADHD and routines are not a thing in my world, so it's always been super hard to keep up with my self studies; never managed to draw something every day on a sketchbook, for example. HOWEVER! I do believe that if you TRULY want to be good at it, and you REALLY want to learn, then you should be able to adapt to your ways and do it without having to follow the traditional, standard "rules" that society dumps on your back (such as the drawing everyday thing). Basically... If you really want it, then go after it.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Don't wait to draw and do creative stuff only when creativity and inspiration strike you, do it even when you don't really feel like it (even if it's a 5 minute thing). Usually if you just sit down and start doing said thing, you'll kinda get in the mood and end up going with the flow, and then suddenly 5 minutes turn into 10 which turn into half an hour, and then suddenly 4h have passed and what is time
You don't have to force yourself to draw something every single day, but it's good to at least try to consume some material related to art a couple of times a week - be it reading articles, watching tutorials or even going on drawing streams.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

It's a double edged sword, really. I love being able to draw, and I love being able to put down things on the paper that otherwise other people would never be able to see unless I described it to them. I do have some trauma related to art school however, and sometimes it burns me out super fast, but I'm slowly recovering and working on it.
All in all, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Maybe some really good cake. But that's a story for another day.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I've done some really good detailed work with an awkward perspective that I'm super proud of
As for life achievements, I've been accepted and graduated from one of the top art schools in the world, all while not having been diagnosed with ADHD yet and STILL having been able to nail it. I've also been able to work at Treyarch (aka Activision) for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as an animator, and that was one of the best experiences I could've ever asked for in my life.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

    Yes, all the time.
I might be biased, but my own boyfriend is one of those people! I've been teaching him a bit lately how to draw since he's always wanted to do it, and he's been improving at impossible rates. Hell, I'm jealous of how easy he grasps concepts and puts them to use. He still has a lot of things to learn obviously, but I like to think that he has a great teacher hahaha!
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Lots of time management, for sure. Gotta be able to rearrange students here and then if you wanna pick up more classes and find more students. But you get used to it!
Something that also helps is having a basic standard class plan that would work for most students, and adjust it accordingly as you learn more about each student.
