About Mariana
Over 25 years! That's how long I've been playing around with art!
I'm 35 years old and I consider myself to be pretty easygoing, cheerful and nice to everyone. I like my classes to be really chill and casual, though if you're feeling adventurous I can give you a hell of a challenge if that's what you're looking for! I'm also extremely honest and I will gladly let you know my opinion on things.
I have an 8-year-old art supervisor - Kiwi, my dog, who never leaves my side - and he might even make an appearance on camera here and there to check out your work. He's really picky though, so you might wanna put up your best effort to please him!
The only thing that I ask is that, while chatting during class, let's please leave out politics and religion. I've got nothing against those topics, I just think that they stir trouble more often than not and I'd rather stay away from that possibility. I just want a nice environment where we can get along!
As for the career technicalities: I got my diploma in Visual Arts in 2012, then immediately moved to the US in order to pursue my animation career. I spent 3 years there studying art and animation - Entertainment Design and Digital Production - in one of the best art/3D schools in the world, called Gnomon. I got my certificate in 2016, and I've worked as freelance illustrator for years. In 2018 I got hired by Treyarch to work as a character animator for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and, today, I work in the film, game and animation industry.
Even though nowadays I prefer having illustration and drawing as a hobby, nothing stops me from teaching it to other people. There's honestly nothing more satisfying than seeing someone improve with my help. I hope to see you around!

I've taught all ages and levels before, from people who wanted to draw or paint casually to others who wanted to apply for an art school. Currently I'm sticking to mostly teenagers and adults.
I'll be teaching you the subjects I can see you have most difficulty with - be it figure drawing, perspective, concept art or even going back to fundamentals as a reminder. I do both traditional and digital art, so I can also teach you how to move from one media to another without fear!
I like to schedule the first lesson as a free lesson to help me know you better, talk more about your goals and see some of your work (if any). It's mostly a casual chat to get to know you better and introduce myself and it rarely lasts a full hour. This helps me not only when preparing personalized art lessons for you, whatever your focus may be, but also when figuring out what works best for you in terms of learning, such as:
- Do you have time for homework?
- Do you prefer a more objective explanation as opposed to a more detailed one?
- Do you prefer learning all the theory first and then practicing later all at once, or to take it in small chunks?
- How experienced are you in art?
- Do you prefer a more casual class or one that challenges you every time?
Just a tiny PSA - if you're starting out from the very beginning with the fundamentals, please bear with me for a couple of classes because it will probably be super boring at first! I'll try to make it as entertaining as possible, but I'm (painfully) aware of how dull the more technical subjects can be. I PROMISE it will get better. Pinky promise.
Also: no-shows or cancellations without previous notice will be considered taught classes and charged in full, as I allocate my time and availability according to the schedule.

I should also mention that I have severe ADHD and I deal with it literally on a daily basis. However, even though it does have its shortcomings, I don't consider it a fully bad thing! Not only does that mean that I work harder than a lot of people out there, but also that I know how to deal with people who are in the same position as I am. I might even be able to teach tricks on how to take advantage of it! So if you're in the same boat, hop in and let's figure out together how to steer this business!

Perfect! I've been working with Mariana for eight months now and I really couldn't be more impressed with her. I have a day job and art is something that I've wanted to get into for awhile but never found my entry point. She has an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge and she understands how to teach you to look at the world differently, too. Perfect! When I first started lessons with Mariana, we worked together to identify my art goals and the gaps in my knowledge and skill set. I provided some illustration samples, history about my art background and examples of other artists that represent my ideal levels of achievement.
I'm a self-taught hobbyist so there was a lot to cover, but Mari ended up designing a great lesson plan focused on building up my fundamental art skills. We've since covered perspective, form, shading, color, and techniques in various traditional and digital media.
Her explanations are clear and the assignments are thoughtful and appropriately challenging. I've been learning a lot, and whenever I have questions she's only happy to work through them with me so I have a full understanding of the material. She graciously supplies extra information and context whenever I need it with excellent pointers to external resources like relevant youtube tutorials, books and web sites.

Perfect! I wanted to understand the mechanics involved in creating a figure drawing from skeleton to primary forms.
Mariana helped me understand the relationships between positive and negative space, setting up the skeletal form using the stretch and pinch pillow approach and rendering limbs dynamically and excitingly.

- I could see that both girls were really shy, but they both did what was asked of them. I could tell that Estelle has been drawing for a little bit longer while Allison is fairly new at it, but they both seemed curious about the activities I gave them.Mariana's response :
I showed them some stretching and warm up exercises which they seemed to understand fairly quickly. I tried to always keep them in the loop about why we'd do the activities I proposed - such as judging their observational skills and creativity - and even managed to squeeze in a little bit of 1-point perspective at the end.
Estelle seems to be a bit more engaged than Allison, while Allison seems to be a bit more technical than Estelle, but they're both good girls.

Mariana is a smart and 'direct' teacher. Her explanation about a lesson is to the point and easy to follow and understood. Even for a non native English speaker like me. I'm a very open person, so if anything happens, you can always send me a message explaining your situation and I'll do my very best to accommodate you. I do, however, have a couple of ground rules for our classes, which is based off of mutual respect.
15 minute grace period:
I will wait for you for 15 minutes after our agreed schedule. After that, unless you've let me know beforehand that you will be late, our lesson will be considered a no show and no refunds will be issued.
Lesson requests:
Please do make sure to accept our lessons and/or send me some sort of confirmation at least a couple of hours beforehand, otherwise I'll assume that we won't have class that day.
24h cancellation policy:
Please let me know ahead of time if you will not be able to make it for a lesson, preferably 24h beforehand. I am aware that life happens, and circumstances change, but a respectful relationship is based on communication.
Class supplies:
Not included in the lesson rate. However, I usually ask for very affordable (yet very good!) basic supplies that can be acquired very easily, and if you have some at home we can make use of those as well.
