About Krisztina
I learned Arabic on three continents. Study and work took me from home to Damascus and Jerusalem, then to Princeton and finally to Cambridge (the original one in the UK). I published articles based on Classical Arabic, Christian Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic texts from premodern manuscripts in several well-regarded academic journals. (Feel free to check out my published research on the Academia website.) Currently I live and work in Cambridge, UK. Over the years, I taught varieties of Arabic to students and researchers. Some undergraduates simply felt the need for extra practice or wanted to progress faster in their Classical Arabic or Qur’anic Arabic course. PhD students and senior scholars were interested in specific genres: I read medieval Muslim religious texts with a postdoc, Christian Arabic theological texts with a postgraduate student, and Arabic philosophical texts with an eminent scholar from a different field of study. The linguistic and religious backgrounds of my students varied considerably. While most have been non-Arabs and non-Muslims, some with no prior knowledge at all of the language, I read premodern Arabic texts with several Muslim students as well as Arabic speakers.

What kind of Arabic do you want to learn? Arabic is the name of many vernaculars used from Iraq to Morocco, of Modern Standard Arabic (fuṣḥā) used in education, formal occasions, and writing across the Arab world, of the early medieval language of the Qur’an, of the Classical Arabic of premodern Islamic scholarship, of the Arabic of the Christians and Jews once numerous in the Middle East, and even more. Of these different Arabic languages or dialects, I primarily teach premodern varieties of Arabic: • Classical Arabic, • Qur’anic Arabic, • Christian Arabic (including Karshuni, Arabic in Syriac script) and • Judaeo-Arabic (Arabic used by Jews, often written in Hebrew script). I also give lessons in reading medieval and early modern Arabic manuscripts. Occasionally I take on students learning Modern Standard Arabic too. If you are a current or aspiring undergraduate student, postgraduate, postdoc, established researcher or any other educated learner interested in learning one of these varieties of Arabic, I would be happy to hear from you. My approach to teaching premodern Arabic relies on a thorough grasp of grammar and a wide vocabulary. If you know both, you will be able to understand premodern Arabic texts accurately and relatively fast. If you are a postgraduate student, a postdoc, or an established researcher, you may need Arabic for an aspect of your research, perhaps to read a genre or a specific text. You will be able to reach your goal much faster with lessons that focus on the genre you need to study in addition to covering Arabic grammar rather than taking a general introductory course into Arabic. Please contact me to discuss if we can put together a course based on your interests. I expect you to memorise and practise new material between two lessons. You will always receive homework; its written component must be submitted at least 24 hours prior to the next lesson. For an adult learner, I recommend one to three lessons per week; at least two hours of independent study should be planned between lessons. Language courses are a collaborative effort between you and me. Without you studying independently between lessons, progression will be slow. With consistent and thorough study, however, you can progress surprisingly fast.

Perfect! Krisztina is by far the best teacher I’ve met when it comes to Arabic grammar, especially Classical Arabic grammar. She explains the rules precisely, often drawing on the Latin grammatical terminology that makes everything click into place for me. She also makes complex texts feel accessible. Best teacher ive had.

I met Krisztina more than 20 years ago, when I was a postdoc in the US and she was a PhD student. She helped me read through Arabic philosophical texts from the Middle Ages. She understood the (to me) nearly incomprehensible texts with ease and explained them to me with endless patience.. She is conscientious, knowledgeable, nice--the perfect tutor.
Enthusiastic and patient. Very, very knowledgeable! My Arabic has improved really fast.
Traveling to Egypt for work time to time, I wanted to be able to read newspapers and follow news on radio and TV. While at home, I took a lesson every week for six months with Krisztina, followed her intensive study plan between the lessons. When I returned to Egypt, I could understand most of the news. Shukran, Krisztina!
Great, extremely knowledgeable, and very thorough teacher! She gave me the exact help I needed. I had studied modern literary Arabic before but had to read medieval Arabic historical sources for my research. Over six months, we read relevant excerpts two to three times a week together. After that, I was ready to continue on my own.

The aim of the initial consultation, which is not a lesson and should not be scheduled here, is to get to know each other, and to allow me to understand the student’s level of Arabic as well as the student’s goals. If at all possible, it takes place in person even if subsequent lessons are online. It is free of charge. The fee for the lessons varies and depends on the extent of specialisation and the need to adapt the lessons to the student’s individual interests. The minimum fee for a lesson is currently £55. If the lesson is not online, compensation for time spent travelling is to be agreed in advance. Students interested in small group lessons, with significantly lower cost per individual, are welcome to arrange a group to meet in person or online. For those interested in lessons for children: I have an enhanced DBS certificate, which I am happy to bring when we first meet. I follow a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel a lesson less than 24 hours before the scheduled time, you will be charged for the lesson. To guarantee that I can check your homework in advance of the lesson, please submit it 24 hours in advance. Thank you.
