About Simon

Teaching piano has been a deeply fulfilling journey over the past four years, during which I’ve guided over 150 students from high school and college backgrounds. Each student comes with different dreams, skills, and challenges, which keeps my teaching approach fresh and adaptive. I focus on creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable exploring their abilities and pushing their limits. My lessons cover essential piano skills such as technical exercises and sight-reading, but also emphasize emotional expression and connecting music to life experiences. I remember one college student who was anxious about performing a classical sonata. We worked together to break down the piece, build confidence through slow practice, and develop performance strategies. When they finally played at their recital and received a standing ovation, it was a powerful moment that symbolized their growth and courage. I believe music education is transformative, offering students not just musical skills but tools for personal development and expression. I’m passionate about helping every student find their voice and enjoy the beautiful journey of making music.

My approach to piano teaching is built on three key principles: responsiveness, musical immersion, and emotional growth. I begin every new teaching relationship by learning about the student’s goals, challenges, and inspirations. This helps me respond not only with relevant lesson material but also with the emotional support they need to thrive. I am deeply committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where students can express themselves freely.

Music is an emotional language, and part of my job is to help students tap into that language through piano. That’s why I include a wide range of activities in my lessons: ear training, rhythm games, improvisation challenges, expressive performance tasks, and more. Each element is designed to build a strong musician—not just someone who can play a piece correctly, but someone who understands and feels what they’re playing. I prioritize immersion in music rather than just technical mastery. We listen to great recordings, compare interpretations, and even explore the history behind certain composers or genres. These discussions often spark curiosity and deepen students’ appreciation for what they’re learning. I encourage performance opportunities when students are ready—whether that’s playing for family, recording themselves, or participating in community recitals—and help them prepare both technically and mentally for those moments. I also believe music education should adapt as students grow. What motivates a 7-year-old beginner may not excite a 14-year-old intermediate learner, so I constantly adjust my materials and approach to reflect changing interests and maturity. I view each lesson as a collaboration where student input is valuable and guiding. We reflect together on progress, challenges, and what excites them most. I teach with enthusiasm, but I also listen deeply. I guide students toward discipline and excellence without pressure or fear. Ultimately, I want them to walk away from our lessons not only as better pianists but as more confident, emotionally intelligent, and curious individuals with a lifelong connection to music.
