About Mykola
I'm a Ukrainian pursuing a PhD in mathematics in Belgium. After spending eight years abroad, I've come to realize that mathematicians should have more societal impact and dedicate more of their time to teaching and mentorship. My experiences as a teaching assistant have led me to an important personal insight: I enjoy teaching even more than doing research :) It brings me genuine joy - and often new mathematical insights as well. I'm an approachable and kind person who tries to make math fun, engaging, and human. I look up to my students and meet them where they are, always aiming to create a space where learning is both meaningful and enjoyable.

I'm more of a mentor than a teacher. I believe that a personal example and a good atmosphere can do wonders for learning.
My teaching method can be summarized as a mentorship-driven, focused on intuitive understanding and steady progress through personalized engagement.
A typical lesson plan would look something like this:
1. Start with an icebreaker - I might show a funny picture or simply ask how the student's day has been so far. This helps me get a sense of their mood and energy level.
2. If it's the first lesson, I'll ask the student which topics they're struggling with. Then I'll go through some toy examples together with them. For instance, if a student says they don't understand elementary fractions, I might write something like
2/5+3/7 on the board. If the student looks unsure, I'll present the solution myself and sketch the rough idea (for example, imagining it as eating pieces of different cakes). We'll dive deeper into the concept in future sessions. I also ask a few reflective questions about the student's dreams, goals, strengths, and areas they'd like to improve. This allows us to create a learning roadmap - or, if they prefer, the student can draw one themselves.
If it's not the first session, I usually begin with an exercise related to the topic we discussed last time. If the student remembers the idea, we build on it. If not, we revisit it together.
I alternate between exercises that the student works on independently and those we solve together. When working alone, they're free to use any resources they like. If a problem turns out to be too challenging, we pause and approach it collaboratively. I believe that some ideas reveal their depth only when explored together, through hints and shared thinking.
I also incorporate elements of the scientific method into my teaching. Many mathematical results (actually, all of them), like the Pythagorean theorem, were originally discovered through experimentation and observation. I often present patterns or examples and guide the student to formulate the result themselves.
3. As the lesson progresses, I adjust the difficulty and number of exercises depending on how the session is going and how the student is feeling. I aim to challenge without overwhelming.
4. At the end of each session, I ask how the student is feeling and what stood out most to them. Then, we sketch a rough plan for the next meeting.
What sets me apart as a tutor is a combination of deep subject knowledge, a wide range of mathematical and life interests, and a cheerful yet reflective personality.
My lessons are designed for high school and college students who want to gain a clearer, more intuitive understanding of math concepts.
