About Dr Vijay Reena

As a budding scientist with a passion for teaching, when I was young I preferred tutors who prioritize explaining fundamental concepts rather than solely relying on textbooks, and this is exactly what I would be doing myself for my students

Clearly defining learning objectives helps both me and the student understand what they aim to achieve during the tutoring sessions. These goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

Emphasizing conceptual understanding over rote memorization is key to long-term retention and application of scientific knowledge. I will focus on explaining the underlying principles behind scientific phenomena, rather than simply providing facts and formulas.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in research and data analysis began during my academic studies, where I was fascinated by how data can reveal patterns and drive decision-making. Private tutoring became an appealing option as I realized how personalized guidance could help students understand complex concepts and apply them effectively.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach research methods and data analysis, which covers topics like quantitative and qualitative research methods, statistical analysis, data visualization, and interpretation of results. I particularly enjoy discussing the practical applications of data analysis and helping students learn how to design and conduct their own research projects. On the other hand, I find less excitement in more theoretical aspects of statistics that don't have immediate practical applications for students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

A significant role model for me was a professor I had during my graduate studies. She had an incredible ability to demystify complex statistical concepts and made research methods both accessible and engaging. Her enthusiasm for the subject and her knack for explaining difficult topics in a clear, practical way greatly influenced my own approach to teaching.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor in research and data analysis needs to be analytical, detail-oriented, and patient. They should be able to break down complex concepts into manageable parts and tailor their teaching methods to suit each student's level of understanding. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide practical, hands-on guidance are also crucial.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One memorable experience involved a student struggling with understanding the concept of statistical significance. We worked together on a project where the student analyzed real-world data and had to interpret their results. By applying the concepts to a tangible example, the student gained a clearer understanding and successfully completed the project. This experience highlighted the importance of practical application in grasping complex concepts.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

A common challenge in teaching research and data analysis is dealing with students' apprehension towards statistical methods and data interpretation. Many students find these topics intimidating, so it's important to build their confidence gradually and use real-world examples to make the material more relatable and less abstract.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in the practical application of research methods and data analysis. I enjoy helping students see how data can be used to make informed decisions and solve real-world problems. While I appreciate the theoretical aspects, my primary focus is on how these methods can be applied in practical scenarios.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

Beyond answering these questions, what makes me a Superprof is my commitment to providing personalized, engaging instruction in research and data analysis. I strive to make complex concepts accessible and to inspire students to apply their knowledge effectively. My approach emphasizes practical skills and real-world applications, ensuring that students not only understand the material but also feel confident using it in their own research.
