  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Science and maths have always been a big part of my life. Growing up, my mam was a nurse, and she taught me about the human body through captivating stories of her work in surgery. My dad was a mathematician, who encouraged my brother and I to list prime factors on our walks to school (often against our will!). Having plenty of pets in our home also instilled a love of animals in me, and is the reason why I became a zoologist.
I have worked as a teacher in Dublin Zoo and Edinburgh, educating groups of secondary school children about the natural world. However, I much prefer working one-on-one with students, where I can explain mathematical and scientific concepts in a way that makes sense to them.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mostly teach Junior and Leaving Certificate maths, but I also teach Junior Certificate science, Leaving Certificate biology and physics, and sometimes university-level maths and science subjects. Since I am a natural scientist, my favourite subject to teach is biology, especially since biology lessons often allow for discussions about our planet, and the conservation and climate issues we face today.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Junior Certificate maths teacher was abundantly helpful during my early secondary school years. I found myself able to tackle most of my classwork and schoolwork, so she assigned me some extra maths work, that was sometimes a bit more difficult, so that I always had a challenge! This is something that I try to do for my own students - I offer more challenging questions and problems to those that are excelling in their current work, so that they can push their grades even higher.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For the Junior and Leaving Certificate, knowledge of the curriculums and exam structure is essential. I sat my Leaving Certificate exams in 2018, and I use up-to-date resources and monitor the maths and science curriculums to ensure that the information I give my students is always accurate.
Perhaps the most important part of being a tutor is tailoring the lessons to suit the student. I look at my students' previous tests and classwork to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and I design my lessons with each individual student in mind.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was in 6th year, my biology teacher went to Petmania at lunch time to buy some Elodea (pondweed) for our experiment on the rate of photosynthesis. The aim was that this underwater plant would release oxygen bubbles during photosynthesis. However, about 20 minutes passed with no bubbles appearing, and I concluded that Petmania had sold her a plastic plant. Cue lots of laughing, and my teacher looking mildly embarrassed. Luckily for her, the bubbles soon appeared, and my hypothesis that the plants were fake were proven wrong!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

As a zoologist, my scientific loyalty lies with animals, so the plant sections of Leaving Certificate biology are not my favourite. Whilst most of my biology students would agree with me, they are grateful that most of these botany chapters have been removed from the exam since I sat it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different.

My passion for teaching started when I was a teenager. I originally wanted to be a primary school teacher, but instead went to university to study biology. After I graduated, I thought about pursuing PhDs in entomology, but found myself attracted to teaching jobs. Whilst I started online tutoring as a side gig, I have realised that I love working with young people, especially when it is my role to instil a love of science and maths in them. Online tutoring is now my full-time job!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

The first thing I do as a tutor is get to know my student. Not only do I ask each student what they are struggling with in maths or science, but I ask them about the other subjects they study, whether they like school, and what their aspirations are after school.
Secondly, I design my lessons with each individual student in mind. If a student is really struggling in a particular area, I will bring it back to basics, and explain the fundamentals before moving on to more difficult work. On the other hand, if they are excelling in their school work, I will provide more challenging problems so that they can achieve the highest grade possible in their exams.
Thirdly, I continuously check back in with my students' parents to make sure that they are happy with their child's tuition, and that their progress is being realised in their school work as well. I welcome all types of feedback, so that I can be a Superprof!
