About Shiney
To me, teaching piano is about more than scales and sheet music—it’s about guiding a student to discover their own voice through sound. My lessons are built around the student’s personal goals, strengths, and learning style. For beginners, that often means learning to read notes, developing rhythm and coordination, and playing simple, rewarding pieces. For intermediate and advanced students, we go deeper into interpretation, musical form, advanced technique, and personal expression. I integrate music theory and improvisation into each lesson to help students become versatile, independent musicians. I love helping students connect the dots between what they play and how music works—why a chord progression feels satisfying, how tension builds in a melody, or what makes a piece feel emotionally powerful. I use a combination of traditional methods and creative approaches like student-led composition, duet playing, and storytelling through music. One of my favorite teaching experiences was working with a student who loved poetry; we built a whole repertoire around setting poems to music on the piano. The result was a deeply emotional and educational process for both of us. I aim to create a studio atmosphere that is warm, encouraging, and free of judgment—where mistakes are welcomed as part of the learning process and each success, no matter how small, is celebrated. My hope is that students leave each lesson not only as better pianists but as more expressive, confident individuals who feel connected to the joy and meaning of music. My approach to teaching piano is grounded in the belief that every student deserves lessons tailored to their unique interests, goals, and learning style. Whether someone is a complete beginner, an adult learner, or an aspiring performer, I aim to provide an encouraging space where technique and creativity grow hand in hand. I start with foundational skills like finger independence, rhythm, and reading notation, but I quickly incorporate music that inspires each student, from classical pieces to contemporary songs, film scores, and beyond. I believe that understanding theory should feel natural and relevant, so I integrate it directly with practical playing and improvisation. Students learn not just to play notes but to express emotion and tell stories through their music. I also emphasize the importance of good practice habits and mindset, helping students overcome frustration and build confidence over time. I incorporate modern tools like recording devices and apps to offer immediate feedback and track progress. One rewarding moment was seeing a shy young student bloom into a confident recital performer by blending structured technique work with imaginative music choices. Ultimately, I want lessons to be joyful and empowering, fostering a lifelong connection to music that enriches every student’s life.
