About Nickolas

I am an honor roll, undergraduate Mathematical sciences (B.Sc.) major who just completed their second year at the University of Guelph. I have lots of professional experience in both natural and physical sciences. I have been employed as a lab assistant at the University of Guelph's Department of Plant Agriculture, where I had the pleasure of gaining experience doing tissue culture, analyzing scientific data and working on long-term biological experiments. I have also have taken on several personal projects which relate mathematical concepts to software/game development. Although my main emphasis is in mathematics, I am very comfortable working with concepts in physics, chemistry, biology, statistics, economics and computer science.

About the lesson

I am a relaxed person who believes in giving students a chance to hone their problem solving skills. When I was in high school, I struggled a lot with mathematics. As a result, over the last few years, I have become very proficient in identifying and resolving common misconceptions many students seem to have. I am familiar with the Ontario high school curriculum, as well as the Ontario curriculum for many first year University/College classes in Calculus, linear algebra and statistics. My teaching methodologies are as follows:

1. Students are introduced to fundamental mathematical terminology and logic - Many traditional classrooms don't spend enough time emphasizing on clear and concise communication in mathematics. During my sessions, students will learn how to approach problems and communicate their steps clearly. We will spend time focusing on pure mathematical concepts as well as simple word problems drawn from studies in natural, physical and social sciences.

2. Students will learn how to create and defend mathematical arguments - Two of my favorite questions are "Why?" and "What should we do next?". During my sessions, I focus on giving students a flavor for mathematical reasoning. The goal here is provide students with the confidence to evaluate their own answers and determine if they are correct. We will explore multiple ways of looking at the same problem and the basics of logical proofs.

3. Students will learn to efficiently solve problems - Aside from a better understanding of mathematics, my sessions will also specifically focus on how students can maximize their performance in a class. Time management is a very important skill. What I've found to be true is that many students are actually quite knowledgeable about the concepts they're studying, however, their main problem lies in applying the concepts to foreign problems and organizing their time properly. Students will be provided the opportunity to test their skills in a timed environment and learn how to apply appropriate shortcuts while solving questions. After all, mathematics is the art of avoiding tedious work!

My rates are as follows:
1. High school classes grades 9-12 (and all levels below) -> 17$/hr
2. First year university classes -> 20$/hr
3. Webcam sessions are 15$/hr for all levels

Please schedule appointments at least 48 hours in advance, it is unlikely I can accommodate anyone with any less notice. As for cancellations, try and give as much notice as possible. I do not charge a fee for cancelling, however my schedule is quite busy so please be considerate.
