About James

Welcome!

I recently completed my master's in economics and finance and am hoping to tutor some students over the coming months whilst I position myself for a career in macroeconomics and financial markets.

Here are some key things to know about me (and why I would make a great tutor!):

• I received a Distinction in Msc Economics and Finance from King's College London and before that I averaged grades equivalent to above a 1st in my economics and maths courses at undergrad.

• My focus in economics is macroeconomics, macroeconomic policy and macroeconometrics. My dissertation looked at monetary policy and supply shocks. These are, in my opinion, the hardest, most fun and most widely relevant areas of economics.

• Besides economics, I have previously studied and achieved top grades at university in politics, law and data science courses. This has undoubtedly made me a better economist!

• I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Amsterdam and before that lived in France for several months whilst at a language school. My French is decent, my Dutch is...getting there!

• Alongside these academic experiences, I have worked in policy research and analysis for a boutique political consultancy and in economic research for S&P Global.

I have loved studying economics and am excited for a career in macroeconomic analysis. In the meantime, I would love to have the opportunity to help students and share some of the skills I have picked up along the way :)

As a recent graduate, I hope to provide a focused and understanding environment. Some key principles you can expect from my sessions are:

• No lessons! I don't see myself as a teacher or a lecturer. I'm here to figure out problems with you and provide a check for your thinking - not to sit there teaching at you. The idea is to have a relaxed, conversational back and forth as this ultimately leads to better learning outcomes.

• No time-wasting! Like any economist, I like short, sharp and highly productive sessions that maximise successful outcomes in as little time as possible. I put emphasis on tailoring sessions to individual needs to achieve this.

• No generalising! In my experience, one of the trickiest things about learning economics is that students don't give enough attention to exactly how economic reasoning works. This makes sense as it can often be very precise and very detailed. But that precision is what makes economics so powerful! And ignoring rigorous economic chains of reasoning will lead to faulty arguments and misunderstandings.

• Not just academic study! Economics works best when it is applied. That means both understanding how content is relevant to the wider world but also relating a student's own ambitions and interests to potential career paths. I have worked at elite organisations that are best-in-class at what they do and I didn't get there because I knew how to define a public good. I'd love to give some advice on what all this studying is for (a point that can be easily lost).

I hope this gives an initial idea of what sessions with me are like. I'm very flexible in terms of content and style, so whether it is more theory-based stuff or practical projects and coursework, I am here to help.
