About Sahana

I used to be a quiet and shy individual, finding myself in situations where there were either language barriers or my shyness hindering my ability to speak. Singing was my way to communicate. I started off my musical journey in Fremont, California under the guidance of Grammy nominee Margo Leduc. Our focus was on how to sing for a performance, how to sing with intention and emotion, how to project your voice. But singing with intention, emotion, projecting my voice seemed so vague. How do I intentionally make a section of a song sound powerful? How do I make a section of a song sound sweet and subtle? I learned a lot from my teachers. I learned how to use my chest voice to project my voice better in my low and mid-range. I studied a bit of opera to build my head voice, to make my voice sound sweeter, but during my journey as a singer, I often hit brick walls and felt like I could not hit the notes I wanted to hit, or sing as agile as I wanted to. That’s when I decided to explore more about the anatomy of the voice on my own and learned how to sing easily across my range whatever tones and power I chose to use. I was always extra enthusiastic about being detail-oriented when building my voice. I trained under so many different instructors, read books, did online courses and learned how to blend the registers, intentionally move my voice box to sound better, how to shape my vowels to achieve the sound I want. Each time my voice grew stronger and broke self-perceived barriers, I became more confident about my voice, and I started speaking more. It took a lot of patience as it was a journey. I learned how to be patient with myself, I worked very consistently, set small achievable goals and solved the questions I had, to get results I wanted for my voice. With that, I grew more confident as a singer, as a speaker, as a performer and as a person. As a teacher and as a singer, I'm always doing my own homework too and constantly updating my knowledge and finding new ways to teach vocal technique better so that everyone has a clear roadmap on how to grow their voice. Who said that people with low voices can’t belt high notes? Who said people with high voices can’t sound warm too. These are the barriers I aim to break for you to help you find your voice. This is for music enthusiasts and hobbyists who want to have fun seeing their voice breaking barriers, musicians who want another skill to add to their portfolios and day-to-day hustlers who need a fun space to just sing their hearts out.

I have been learning to sing for about 17 years and I have been teaching vocals for over 5 years. Over this course of time, I have been developing a vocal method that is focused on mastering vocal range, blending registers, belting, and agility with as much detail as I can. My approach is highly personalized, emphasizing the importance of understanding the musculature involved in singing and using targeted exercises to overcome vocal challenges. I work closely with each student to identify specific exercises that yield the best results, tailoring the practice to your unique voice, empowering you to sing freely and confidently and most importantly, be yourself.

What you will learn: Western Vocal Techniques ONLY
1. A thorough understanding of "singing from the diaphragm".
2. How to build your chest voice, head voice, falsetto and mixed voice to sing high notes and low notes easily.
3. A thorough understanding of how to use muscles like the abdomen and larynx to sing efficiently.
4. How to remove any strain or tension in your throat.
5. Belting & blending registers
6. Vocal Agility
7. Special techniques like vibrato, singing riffs and runs.
8. Applying vocal techniques to the songs you enjoy singing.

During each of our sessions, I will be taking notes, with written feedback, so that every student knows what to practice, when and for how long. I'll break it down in steps and stages and paint a clear roadmap to grow your voice.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

I used to be a socially anxious individual, finding myself in situations where there were either language barriers or social anxiety hindering my ability to speak.

I grew up in a very musical family though. My dad played guitar and was in a band and his sister played the piano as well. My mom and her sister could sing. My cousin played the piano and sang. I wanted to copy my cousin, so I picked up the piano first. It was my 3rd grade teacher who told me I had a great singing voice, I felt validated, so I started singing. But over time, since I had trouble speaking, singing was my way to communicate.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

I started off my musical journey in Fremont, California and then moved on to a couple of schools in bangalore. I was taught how to sing for a performance, how to sing with intention and emotion, how to project your voice and develop general musicianship, music theory, western classical and opera, broadway, jazz, blues. My learning journey was a bit jumbled up and I had more questions than answers.

How do I intentionally make a section of a song sound powerful? How do I make a section of a song sound sweet and subtle? How do I hit this high note without feeling strain?

I learnt a lot from my teachers. I learnt how to use my chest voice to project my voice better in my low and mid range. I studied a bit of opera to build my head voice and make my voice sound sweeter, but during my journey as a singer, I often hit brick walls and felt like I could not hit the notes I wanted to hit, or sing as agile as I wanted to.

That's when I decided to explore more about the anatomy of the voice on my own and learnt how to sing easily across my range, with whatever tones and power I chose to use. I was always extra enthusiastic about being detail-oriented when building my voice. I trained under so many different instructors, read books, did online courses and learnt how to blend the registers, intentionally move my voice box to relieve tension, and how to shape my vowels to achieve the sound I want. It was a 17 year long journey and I wanted to organize what I had learnt and teach people how to sing in a much more systematic way than how I learnt it.

Each time my voice grew stronger and broke self-perceived barriers, I became more confident about my voice, and I started speaking more. It took a lot of patience as it was a journey. I learnt how to be patient with myself, I worked very consistently, set small achievable goals and solved the questions I had, to get results I wanted for my voice. My love for music grew, my love for my voice grew and with that, I grew more confident as a singer, as a speaker, as a performer and as a person. I understand how finding your voice helps your overall confidence. Now I want to help my students find their voices too.
  • How does your work help society?

Music is always a great outlet. It is also a great break from day-to-day hustling. My story of how it built my confidence could be another person's story too. It can be a strong motivator. There are a lot of health benefits of singing like improved breathing, strong abdominal muscles etc as well. I believe that learning to sing could be very healing or just be a good source of recreation.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

The vocal coach Ken Tamplin is my role model. I still continue to follow his methods to sing and it has shaped my voice and my teaching style to a great extent. I admire his passion for music and vocals and I admire how detail-oriented he is with teaching vocals.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I have hundreds of hobbies outside of work: Reading books, artwork like coloring and crocheting, studying psychology for leisure (I have a master's degree in clinical psychology), watching historical documentaries, reading DC comic books, playing video games, playing guitar, and performing at concerts. I read physics for leisure and solve math problems as a hobby too. I used to practice calligraphy. I have the habit of exploring new hobbies and new subjects all the time.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

I have a student that I have been teaching for 3 years, and she used to be a little shy and would barely speak in class during our first few sessions. Right now, she is very interactive not only in my class but at school too. She told me this story about how singing made her feel more confident to speak. The feedback that my students gave me was what prompted me to form the structure and vision of my teaching approach.
