About Antônio

I discovered my passion for piano at age 13, inspired by the powerful storytelling in The Pianist. Driven by curiosity and dedication, I quickly advanced, and within three years, I began my Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance, graduating as one of the top students in my class. During and after my university years, I achieved significant milestones, including winning many prestigious international piano competitions and participating in masterclasses with world class musicians such as Grzegorz Niemczuk and Cristian Budu.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

As a kid I was always fond of all kinds of music and took ocasional lessons for a choir I was a part of in my school, then after watching the movie The Pianist I began to be interested in Chopin's music and piano playing. That's when I first started piano lessons.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Nelson Freire is an artist I like a lot, and I am particularly passionate about piano music, so I could include Liszt's Sonata in B minor and Chopin's Concertos and Etudes to narrow it down, but piano music in general is my passion.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most important thing is to develop a range of sounds that the student can have. Since the piano is a percussive instrument, to create a singing effect is very difficult, but it's also really special when we learn how it works and start to use it in our playing.
Apart from that, pedaling well is super important, as well as actively listening to the sound that's coming out of the piano.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Regardless of what's the most complicated one, I can tell the piano is the easiest to start for sure! Mastering it is a lifetime's work, but it's an instrument that offers the possibility to even a beginner to take a beautiful sound out of it already.
Of course all instruments have their own difficulty to be played in an advanced level, but I believe that the Violin is a particularly difficult one to stay motivated to keep learning until a person reaches the sound they desire.
  • What are your keys to success?

Ethics to the student, thinking how can I be of service, plus trying constantly to provide more value, being humble enough to understand I can always do better, learn and improve.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

From the current times they would be:
Cristian Budu, not only because he is a fantastic artist and pianist, the kind you see once every 100 years, but also because he's really fun and a fantastic person!
Jacob Collier, to see his musical vitality and energy!
Martha Argerich because she's a living legend, no further comment needed about her for sure!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I will bring here an inspiring simple story: once a student of mine who was playing for around 20 years at that time was feeling super unmotivated about learning and continuing to learn a particular song, even though she really liked and loved it. So to push her and help her to keep striving for being better each time, I gave her a piece of advice that helped a lot, which was an inspiring saying I heard from a wise musician once: "Sometimes there's no light at the end of the tunnel, but we have to light a torch."
So for any time me or student feels down about the amount of work it takes to play well, I remember them why they started their journey and they have always thanked me for it.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

To be sensitive to students' desires and aspirations is a goal of mine always and something I keep in mind as the approach to each student is made specifically for their needs.
So combining that with a solid musical knowledge and the humbleness to know there is never too much to be explored in music are keys to being a successful music teacher, I believe.
