About Denis

Holder of a Master's degree in composition, a 1st prize in orchestration and composition, a gold medal in jazz arrangement, I have been a teacher of musical writing for more than 30 years (including 14 years at the CIM in Paris).

Learning how to write music allows you to hear it better, to situate your role as an instrumentalist according to the musical style played, to know how to find your way in the sound space...

I developed my own teaching method: I drew inspiration from all the teachers I met during my studies, from all the groups in which I played, from all the music I listened to, analyzed and of course written to establish my lesson plan. The international diversity of students who have benefited from my teaching, and their enthusiastic reactions, seem to indicate that I am on a good path to transmitting past and present knowledge of music writing.
If you would like to discover my musical work, I invite you to go to my site...

The music writing courses (jazz harmony and contemporary music, arrangement, composition, orchestration) are suitable for all levels, in all styles of music.
Each subject is built over a two-year cycle and, at each course, the student receives a handout of the concept worked on, with an assignment to return for the next course.

ARRANGEMENT
“Understanding today’s music”

The purpose of the arranging course is to show the different stages which lead to the creation of a musical piece, whether it is sung or not. Through this teaching, the student discovers how a work is constructed in different styles, and develops his autonomy as a creator in relation to his imagination.
Learning takes place little by little, and the student will thus master all the constituent elements of music which fit together, for the pleasure of his listening and ours!

Technique at the service of inspiration never leaves a “blank sheet” for those who want to write music…

My lesson plan, organized in the follow-up and difficulty of the concepts, is established on different literatures from schools (Berklee School, Dick Grove School…), composers and pedagogues (Gordon Delamont, Bill Dobbins…) and my own experience. Everything is enriched by the interaction established with my students: the theory is magnified thanks to the contribution of their questions!
A course is an exchange with new thoughts…

Program

The first cycle is mainly focused on knowledge of the writing techniques most used in today's world of music.
The second cycle allows you to open up to “contemporary” colors, but also to learn how to organize your material to make a work of art!

ORCHESTRATION
“Tradition at the service of modernity”

Orchestrating means “putting timbres together” to create a sound!
In this course, we learn to manage the instruments of the Orchestra and to create sound colors according to the emotion to be transmitted...
Of course, this knowledge can be adapted to all instruments, both acoustic and electric!

To understand a sound, you have to master different stages. First, understand the mechanics of the instruments (how do they work? with fingers, air?...) Then, know what I want to mix (a clarinet and a flute? horns and strings? ...) and what I don't want to mix! Finally, organize my choices so that it creates what I want to hear (in what registers? with doubles or not?...) with the instruments used!...

Program

The first cycle focuses on the knowledge and use of “classical” instruments for String Quartet, String Ensemble and double Wind Quintet.
The second cycle opens onto the world of the Symphony Orchestra (in pairs, in pairs, with the addition of percussion, a harp, etc.), and on the knowledge of less “traditional” instruments.

JAZZ HARMONY
“Understand where it all started…”

Harmony developed thanks to rules… which we always try to circumvent!
Whether in the tonal, modal or synthetic world, harmony often serves as a basis for reflection for composition, for improvisation (but not only that!...).
Let's discover together the codes and conventions that govern this universe!

Program

The first cycle focuses on the different harmonic structures, scales, modes, and the use of chords in the tonal world depending on the density, the position of the figuration, the inversion, the degrees... and the instruments that play!
The second cycle focuses on modal music, exchanges with the synthetic world (so often used in Jazz!) and on less “traditional” sequences that we can encounter in current music (Blues, Pop, Rock… ), image music, advertising music.
