About Lukas

I have been training in music since I was 6, and have also been composing since then for 15+ years. I am also a graduate of Trinity Western University with a BA in music, and have held a T.A. position for an Intro to Digital Recording course offered there. I have done theory, harmony, music composition, and piano lessons at this prestigious university. I have also completed up to RCM grade 10 (theory, harmony, and performance). I have 3 pieces for gaming/theme music (showcasing some unconventional, as well as some conventional harmonies), and also my own (original) 7-minute film score interpretation for a CGI animated short film created by Taiko Studios (which I am not affiliated with) @ (concealed information) I also have a 4-minute song I've completed with a singer. But most importantly, I'm here to help.

I like to teach following these 4 steps: 1) Cover material. "Material" refers to applicable worksheets/notes as well as the topic itself. The student will be highly encouraged to take notes on what they think are key points. Notes are CRUCIAL. They serve to remind and reinforce synapse connections in the brain for short-term and long-term memory. Repetition, repetition, repetition! 2) Homework (means repetition of assigned practice) 3) Feedback (play it back to me) 4) Repeat Step 1. "Material" can refer to the current material if feedback is "bad", and next material if current material is "sufficient." I also believe in keeping lessons fun and enjoyable. Lessons should have some flavor to them. Like in cooking. Scheduling: I like to schedule on a one-to-one basis via email or a social media account for flexible hours for both student and teacher. *If you schedule a lesson with me, a 1-hour minimum session is required so at least there is some adequate learning going on. The first 30 minutes are still free.*

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I believe I was naturally born with an ear for music. Usually, you know you were born with a gift, talent, or hobby because you know deep inside that you love it. It's a part of who you are. I have been playing piano and composing since I was 6, and that's because of my wonderful parents. They realized I had a passion for music early on, and I've carried this passion with me for 15+ years composing music and teaching piano. And I love what I'm doing.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

For one thing, I love the sound of music. No, not the film (well actually, I really do like the film), but what I mean is the frequencies and that hit my Cochlea (which transforms sound waves into meaningful signals called 'music.' Beats, bass, melody, rhythm, harmony. Just the thought of creating another piece however I want is true freedom and creativity to me.
The other reason I am passionate about my subject is people. Sure, I love receiving praise for the work I do and my performances (and receiving criticism is part of the process too). But when I see one of my students conquer a milestone, I know I'm doing the right thing.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Tutoring is about both student and teacher. You can't have tutoring work without the other person - you need both sides of the equation. I try the best I can to make this a reality when teaching students by following an adaptive formula I have created to make productive use of time and energy. What I like about tutoring is how much you can learn from how your teach your students. For example, I'm always thinking about how I can improve my formula to maximize efficiency and progress. After all, there's no perfect plan. But I believe it is important to keep the student in mind, and guide them in the right path. Because again, lessons are about student and teacher, not just one side of the equation. And that's why I try to keep lessons flavorful and enjoyable. Like in cooking.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In terms of role models, I think I would have to say my parents. They are hard working, diligent in what they do, and wise. They are the reason I started my music career in the first place.
Jef Gibbons, my music composition teacher inspired my to hone my music production/composition skills and improve from what I already know. He has been a pleasure to work with for sound design, mixing and mastering.
Suzanne Klukas, my Trinity Western University piano teacher has been a huge inspiration to me because of her highly advanced knowledge of everything music, including posture, technique, and musical styles and eras. She has made me appreciate discipline and the art of practice.
  • What are your keys to success?

Really, when it comes down to it, it's about how much time you spend honing your craft. I don't think there's a "get good quick" scheme. But at the same time, work smarter more than you work harder. Find ways to educate yourself. There are tons of resources online which can increase your speed in learning, and I believe I am one of those sources available for your needs. If I had to use three words to summarize what I just said, they would be: repetition, dedication, and resourcefulness. Finally, I find an attitude of humility and acceptance really helps you achieve these things.
