About Joseph

A hardworking, creative, passionate and ambitious individual who is widely recognised as a performer, improvisor and composer. I continue to build on being one of the most versatile double and electric bassists in the UK bringing me an accomplished career as a musician both touring and recording internationally spanning the past 10 years predominantly in the international Jazz scene. I have received much acclaim for my contribution to the music scene that I thrive in today, being named ‘one to watch’ in Bass Guitar Magazine and appearing in the WCOM Jazz Musician of the Year final. Most recently I received a the Sir Elton John Scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded the prize for excellence upon graduating.

2020 saw the release of my debut album ‘Seven Japanese Tales’, boasting a roster of some of the finest jazz musicians in Europe. It drew critical praise internationally, gaining a gamut of new fans including Phronesis founder, Jasper Høiby, who commented ‘anyone who doubts there’s a UK jazz scene worth taking note of should listen to Joe Downard's album’.

‘His evolution has seen him move from this position as a respected session player towards becoming a composer in his own right. The playing is outstanding’ ★★★★  Jazzwise Magazine

As well as being an artist and band leader, I work freelance from home as a library music composer. Across television, radio and online my compositions have been featured on BBC documentaries, MTV and most recently CNN and BBC news coverage of Virgin Galactic’s Spaceship Two Mission

Over the past 5 years I have built up experience in both producing and ad prod for my own music but also with some of the best up and coming artists in London. I work freelance out of Studio 23 NW and have worked closely with artists such as Jon Moody (Franc Moody), Sharky, Speakman Sound, Kojey Radical, Paradise (The 57th Dynasty).

I lead a collective that collaborate with artists, filmmakers and other art forms to create music with no boarders. The collective’s sonic range can be heard on NYC documentary Film Festival nominated short film ‘AYMAN’ and our most recent album release “We The People” was play-listed and featured by BBC Radio 1Xtra and Worldwide FM.

With the years of experience that I possess as an instrumentalist, composer and producer I am now looking to focus some of my efforts towards education within the music and arts sector to inspire and motivate the next generation of talent.
Being so passionate about education, I place the utmost importance on improving a culture for learning by devoting my time and experience toward music education through 1-1 tuition, ensemble based learning and music composition and music industry lecturing.

As my teaching experience continues to develop, I have solidified strengths that I believe will set me apart and make me a valued mentor and educator. During my practise as a teacher, I have helped to develop young musicians in stylistic awareness, ensemble playing, improvisation and composition. I have built up a confident mentoring structure in my teaching to ensure that all of my students achieve the level they desire but at a pace that suits them and of course an experience full of enjoyment for making music! The focus on collaborative composition and improvisation is something that really excites me about the role and I would be able to contribute significantly because of my experience as a professional musician.

My outgoing nature and incredibly passionate feelings regarding jazz music especially will help to create the positive learning environment that is clearly important to Lewisham Music but also be to able to integrate that in to a team environment.

My most current mentoring journey is working with younger musicians through my current position at Glenthorne Hight School that gives young contemporary musicians the opportunity to enhance their instrumental technique, develop performance skills and build a network of other young people passionate about rock and pop music. Each week students learn a new song, which may be a classic song from the 1950s, a song that is currently in the charts or anything in between. Myself and other tutors teach the techniques required to perform the song on their chosen instrument culminating in a live performance scenario with a full band.

Additionally my past experience can be shown through my time spent mentoring with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra having once been a member of the band. This involved mentoring students in improvisation and musicianship, providing a gateway to the profession for many future stars of the UK jazz scene.

As a teacher and mentor I have helped to develop both musicians in technique, theory, stylistic awareness, ensemble playing, improvisation and composition.

I have built up a confident mentoring structure in my teaching to ensure that all of my students achieve the level they desire but at a pace that suits them and of course an experience full of enjoyment for making music!

The focus is to make small goals and to help to lay out a clear pathway that involves both discipline but also exploration, allowing my students to discover their own sound.
